Plagued by underdeveloped arguments and shoddy research

This book is interesting in some places, but only as a jumping off point for further research. It presents a very one sided narrative, and often glosses over or fails to mention research that contradicts its assertions. It adequately explains most issues it touches on, but tends to oversimplify the causes, failing to provide sufficient proof to back up the assertions that it treats as fact. The author, a Canadian, humorously spends much of the book accusing her fellow Westerners of being Eurocentric, and failing to elevate the voices of those in non-Western nations. An admittedly valid point which she proves with her heavy reliance on the research of Western anthropologists and social scientists for her main points.

The text is sprinkled with references to the work of others, but if you go and actually read the research being cited, you notice that the conclusions being drawn by Fedorak are not necessarily supported there.

The book comes very close to being insightful on several occasions, but is ultimately bogged down by its own underdeveloped and contradictory arguments.

Could you live with only being able to control your left foot? Could you tolerate feeling as though you were a prisoner in your own body? In My Left Foot, Christie Brown paints a vivid picture of his challenging and incredible life. The author's writing style clearly demonstrates his experiences moving through life with the crippling effects of cerebral palsy. Readers who have no experience with this devastating disease will particularly benefit from the account of Mr. Brown's life, and will be taken on an emotional journey they won't forget. Upon finishing this book, it is apparent Mr. Brown accomplished his goal of showing the reader the challenges of living with a severe impairment. When I read the last page, I was moved, inspired, and thankful for having had the opportunity to read this enlightening book.

Brown effectively shares his struggles of living with cerebral palsy throughout the book. In the introductory chapter, he describes his home life: being number ten of twenty-two children in the family. Because of his difficult birth and obvious affliction, his parents chose not to name him, in what seemed like an effort to to not get attached to him. As he aged, doctors said there was no hope for improvement, as he had not met any developmental milestones or shown any sign of intelligence. This outward appearance, of intellectual vacancy, was not representative of what was going on inside Christie. He was effectively locked in. But inactive silence would not be his fate. At five years, to the shock of his family, he painstakingly picked up chalk with his left foot and wrote the letter A: “Then I looked up and became aware that everyone had stopped talking and were staring at me silently. Nobody stirred.”

As the book progresses, Brown tells his story through chronological order, grouping chapters with the ages he was. Chapter 2 describes his life when he was 6 and 7 years old, when he was able to sit up and crawl. By Chapter 3, he is 7, and can sit up without support, but cannot feel himself. He describes these as his best years, where he has good friends, respect, and acceptance for who he is. Although his family doesn’t have much money, he is happy and considers his childhood a good one.

By Chapter 4, Brown is growing into an older boy, and begins to notice people look at him strangely. He cannot walk, speak, dress or feed himself independently. He realizes he is helpless. This discovery morphs into a self-hatred. However, he eventually develops a hobby: painting. His freedom of artistic expression allows him to rise above his depression. “I was fascinated by the little solid blocks of paint—blue, red, yellow, green and white. Later in the day I sat and watched Paddy as he tried to make some impression with the paints on a piece of white cardboard…but he only made a mess and in a queer way I felt annoyed with him—and a bit jealous.” By Chapter 7, as a 13-15 year old teenager, he’s painting everything. Although he doesn’t leave the house, he’s preoccupied with his neighbor Jenny and develops a crush on her. However, when she looks at him with pity, his feelings for her change. He realizes that she never liked him in return; she only spent time with him because she pitied him. He finds her pity to be insulting and it crushes him emotionally, as his hopes for “normalcy” are ruined.

In his later teenage years, Brown falls into a depression again due to his “narrow existence.” He is lonely and restless. Painting no longer stirs his soul. He longs for freedom. He wants to be ordinary. His new passion is to write stories, but he continues to wrestle with loneliness. He feels his life is God’s practical joke on him.

In his adult years, he is crushed when his hopes that a new treatment that might cure cerebral palsy are quickly squashed. When he meets and communicates with Sheila through writing, his hope is renewed, he now has a purpose for living. In writing, he discovers that he’d like to pen his autobiography—hence, My Left Foot is born. He finds solace in music, writing, and in a new clinic which helps him to tackle new breathing techniques, improving one’s pride, and not focusing on pity. He is very happy with the tremendous results he receives through speech therapy at the clinic, as he is now able to speak with more clarity. The book ends on a high note, with Brown having hope for the future and accepting who he is.

The book was a great read overall; however, the pacing near the middle was a little slow. In his later teenage and adult years, my attention wandered a bit, as I was eager to move forward with the storyline. For some readers, the description of his depression in his later teenage years might seem repetitive of the depression he faced earlier in his life, but to leave it out, would be a dishonest reflection of his journey. Despite these shortcomings, the book teaches a lot, not just about cerebral palsy, but its affects individuals and their families as well. It is difficult to imagine what it would be like to live with this crippling condition, but Christie Brown successfully opened my eyes and I was inspired by his tenacity to find his purpose and his triumph over adversity.

This book is for people who love stories about the underdog who overcomes seemingly impossible odds, while learning to love themselves regardless of the hand life dealt them. I found myself emotionally involved with Brown's story, rooting for him and hoping that he would find joy and peace. His story is certainly inspirational, and it reminds me to be thankful for what I take for granted: the freedom to easily move and speak.

This book is great reading

"My Left Foot" is about a young man, born in 1932 to a Dublin bricklayer, with cerebral palsy who cannot even control his limbs let alone write his own autobiography. He starts off with his childhood: his relatives and doctors are telling his mother that he will amount to nothing; he was a moron. But his mother never gives up on him, for she knew that inside his useless body was a very capable mind. She teaches him to write with his left foot. By the time he's five years old, he knows his whole alphabet! He goes on and tells about his life growing up with twelve other siblings. He speaks of how the startling realization, that he was not like everyone else, changed his life. And he finishes with how he finds inside himself what he had all along. Christy Brown really shows his talent for writing in "My Left Foot". He tells his story without ever being depressing and sulky and there are parts that will just make you laugh out loud, especially when he talks about his first attempts at writing his autobiography.
The movie is also great; Daniel Day-Lewis, in his Oscar winning role, is excellent. It gave the book the recognition it deserved as being a great piece of classic literature

So good!! A must read for Fielding fans!!

So beautiful that it will make you cry. This is Kim Fielding's best work, I'm telling you.

I'm going to tell you folks a story about patience.

Once, I started a book by one of my favorite authors. It was a little slow going at first, and I wasn't sure if I was going to connect to the main characters. I was pretty sure that it was going to be a middling read for me, despite the gorgeous prose. But I stuck with it and, little by little, it just grew on me.

At about 30% in I was feeling pretty good about it. By 50% in, I had a serious crush on the story. At 75%, it was love. By 100% I was crying because I didn't want to let it go.

This is absolutely not a razzle-dazzle story. It isn't in your face in any way. The sex is hot and sweet, but you wouldn't read it for that alone, and there is almost zero drama in the story. It is simply a character study of two men in a small town who have lived and lost and how they come to fit in each others lives.

I'm not kidding when I say it isn't action-packed. These guys spend most of their time tending bar, fixing things around the inn where the story takes place, doing mundane chores, really. But you know what? You will love reading about the mundane stuff because, at the same time, the real stuff is happening beneath the surface.

Jimmy... just such a complex, perfectly imagined character. He starts off the book coming across as a aloof drifter, but then he becomes so much more. We find out what shaped him, and I simply loved having only his POV. Sometimes single POV books can be tricky, but it worked here.

Shane, he just stole my heart. Disabled from an accident, he is still unflaggingly brave, loyal, interesting... I can't stop thinking of positive descriptors. I loved his sense of community and family and how willing he was to open his heart to Jimmy.

If you are a Kim Fielding fan or a fan of well-crafted, slow burn stories, you must pick this one up. I can't stop thinking about the characters and you won't be able to either.

This is a quietly unfolding love story which was a nice change of pace. Highly recommended.

Jimmy’s been a drifter since he was fourteen years old. Bad decisions, stupid mistakes, no relationships, no loving family or friends, moving from job to job, town to town, never staying more than a few weeks or a season, with never more than a few bucks to his name. It may not be anyone else’s idea of a good life, but Jimmy has no regrets and no plans to change any time soon. Jimmy picks up Tom, a dying man trying to get to Rattlesnake, CA to deliver a letter to his estranged son Shane. Tom doesn’t make it to Rattlesnake, but Jimmy feels the need to deliver his letter whether Shane.

Jimmy finds Shane Little in the old west mining town of Rattlesnake that has managed to retain some of the 1850’s feel from when the town was built. Shane is the bartender at the Rattlesnake Inn, which is owned by his Aunt. He’s lived his whole life there, has a large and loving family and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. He moves slowly, with obvious difficulty, has scars on his face, but is friendly and spends the evening talking with Jimmy at the bar. Jimmy decides not to hand over the letter and possibly disrupt Shane’s life, but to just keep moving on. Too bad his old car has other ideas. The next morning Jimmy finds himself sitting in the diner with a few bucks, no car and a talkative Shane, who is eager to hear Jimmy’s stories of the road and help solve his immediate problems with a job as the Inn’s handyman. Although the itch to leave is always there, one day turns to two and Jimmy finds a new reason to stay each morning, most of which relate back to Shane.

There is beauty in the simplicity of this story, with writing that puts you right there in the town of Rattlesnake. Told from Jimmy’s point of view, the majority of the action takes place in the Inn, revolving around the day-to-day tasks there. As Jimmy and Shane get to know each other better we hear more of his stories from the road, although it’s hard to be sure which are true and which are a bit embellished. While he may tell a tale or two, at the heart of it Jimmy is a good man who has never had anyone on his side and doesn’t think he deserves what Shane has and wants to give. The smallest acts of trust and care are almost enough to bring Jimmy to tears. Shane is sure he has Jimmy figured out and that Jimmy’s love of his drifting lifestyle is only because he never has had any reason to stay somewhere.

Shane is a wonderful character that I couldn’t help but love from the start. He sees himself as broken inside and out, but he is kind, generous and outgoing. His life drastically changed ten years ago and he has most of the town looking out for him and that includes making sure Jimmy knows not to hurt him. Jimmy is almost immediately caught up in Shane’s spell. Watching Jimmy fall for Shane and the town and feel a bit of hope then immediately fear it shows how vulnerable he really is.

“Well, but this was hope, wasn’t it? And Jimmy knew perfectly well what hope became: bitter ashes. Eventually Shane would see Jimmy’s true self and then he’d turn away in anger and disgust. And Jimmy … he couldn’t survive another turning away.”

Kim Fielding’s writing is so easy to read, I was quickly immersed in the small world she created. This is a quietly unfolding love story without epic drama or angst, and Jimmy and Shane are both layered characters with engaging personalities and great chemistry. It was a nice change of pace and I highly recommend it.

Beautiful Story!

Kim Fielding is an extraordinary storyteller. This is the story of two incredibly endearing but damaged men. Jimmy, a drifter, who gave a lift to an old man who died in his car leaving a letter Jimmy took as his duty to deliver to his son in Rattlesnake. And Shane, a bartender at an inn who gives him a job and a place to stay—he has been in an accident that ended his life as he knew it and forced him to find a new place in the world and accept his limitations. Jimmy has been unable to stay anywhere for years, he feels trapped and has to keep moving. Now, at Rattlesnake, with Shane, a trust and sense of belonging begin to develop, scaring him senseless. This is the story of their journey, told beautifully, it carries you with them, with their insecurities, their tenderness and their fears. It is a must read!

This book is really great for those of us interested in the evolution of design in the 20th century. Moving chronologically, the book showcases some familiar as well as some forgotten design marvels. Excellent Teacher Resource!

This book has everything a teacher could want in order to teach his/her students about the people behind the development of mathematics: sketches of the mathematicians, anecdotes, related activities for each person, and the solutions. Teaching the history of math to kids really gives them a deeper appreciation of the subject. I have even developed projects from this book. This is a great tool to begin with.

Once upon a time, woodworkers had to rely upon hand tools exclusively; but recently, the development of power tools relegated hand tools to the status of quaint antiques. In this book, Hack, a contributor to Fine Woodworking and the author of The Handplane Book, rethinks their usefulness. He argues that hand tools are, in some cases, better than their motorized counterparts; they're both quiet and, because they lack motors and generate very little dust, relatively safe. He covers tools of all typesAchisels, planes, saws, hammers, and measuring devices, some plain and others fancy. Not as good as Aldren A. Watson's Hand Tools: Their Ways and Workings (Lyons, 1993. reprint.), this book does contain excellent chapters on making and restoring tools and on buying used toolsAand the wealth of beautiful photographs will make even the most casual woodworker salivate. If you're into hand tools, this book is awsome

I highly recommend Classic Hand Tools for many reasons, but in a nutshell it is a book to help me get through the long winter here in Minnesota. I read it randomly and don't mind at all reading parts several times.
Not only is it well written, (I'm a "professional writer" so I'm hard to please) it is beautifully produced with many excellent photos. You get a short course of the history of hand tools... with a special emphasis on planes. Mr Hack also produced a book of this size and quality, specifically about planes. I plan to get that one on also.
The book is not limited to woodworking tools; Hack also touches on black smithing -- the sort that many tradesmen would have had to know in the days before mass-produced tools. Also there is a chapter on how to buy used hand tools.

Garrett Hack feels that his hand tools have become extensions of
himself and are linked with what he makes and how he makes it. He
also believes that learning about hand tools and how to use them
is part of the pleasure to be gotten from working with wood.
His beautiful and informative book, "Classic Hand Tools", will
convince even the most casual "weekend wood-butcher" that he's
right.
Hack's presentation of hand tools is organized according to their
normal purposes: boring, sawing, planing, marking and measuring,
striking and chiseling and he provides historical insights into
the development of the more common hand tools. For example,
"Striking Tools" starts with axes and hatchets and moves through
twybills and throes to mallets and hammers.
Each major section surveys numerous variants of the class of tools
being dealt with, and covers use, maintenance, sharpening and
tuning. As a bonus, most sections contain informative sidebars
providing advice and tips from the master.
Although the author's bias is for Western tools built before World
War II, he includes explanations and discussion of some Eastern
hand tools and explains what's involved in making your own tools,
buying used tools and strategies for restoring old ones. There's
even a section on workshops, benches and clamps.
This handsome work is illustrated by more than 300 photgraphs and
40 drawings and features an introduction, bibliography and index.
John Sheldon's superb photography more than exceeds the exacting
standards of the Taunton Press.
Garrett Hack, a farmer, tool collector and trained architect, has
been making furniture professionally for more than 25 years. He
is a regular contributor to Fine Woodworking magazine.
