Hunting monsters isn't about finding them

Full disclosure, I'm a long-time reader of Darren's blog Tetrapod Zoology.

"What we have here, ladies and gentlemen, is failure to communicate." That's actually one of the major themes that comes through in this book. This isn't yet another regurgitation of famous monster stories. Rather, it's an examination of the evidence that supports these famous stories. It's the uncropped pictures (as of Nessie), the full scope of the arguments over the Patterson Bigfoot footage, and so on. It talks about the political and commercial agendas of various players, something you rarely see covered.

In other words, it's a warts-and-all investigation of the evidence, and that's why it's about hunting monsters, rather than finding them. I do agree with the other reviewer who said that the book gets repetitive, but in a way that's the point. Ultimately, it's the same problem repeatedly, of questionable (often staged) evidence, credulous and/or sloppy investigators, authors who over-generalize and ignore details (particularly on lake and sea monsters) in order to make better stories, and, ultimately, monsters whose descriptions somehow morph over the decades to mirror the latest pop science fads. In other words, it is a failure to communicate, of stories being retold, misinterpreted, respun, and ultimately solidified into cultural tropes that have little to do with the original evidence. And that original evidence often seems to have been a prank, a campfire story, or a get-rich-quick scheme.

This is the type of investigation you don't find in all those books on Nessie or Sasquatch. While the book acknowledges that there's still mysteries out there (like the Orang Pendek), in most cases cryptids seem to be the product of human creators and true believers, rather than nature. And that needs to be communicated.

Fair and evenhanded

The author was on the Monstertalk podcast plugging this book. He was interesting and engaging so I thought I would give his book a shot.

Naish comes across as a sympathetic skeptic. He clearly does not believe that any of the creatures covered in this relatively brief book have a flesh and blood existence but he does not dismiss the field of cryptozoology as a psuedoscience either. He evaluates evidence fairly and takes great pains to explain why eyewitness testimony can't establish the existence of these creatures anymore than it can establish the existence of ghosts, fairies, vampires, witches, etc. The physical evidence is always either ambiguous or turns out to be something mundane. Naish concludes that cryptozoology is ultimately more about psychology and sociology and there is precious little about zoology here. Yet he does not think this is all a waste of time and effort and that good can (and has) come of it.

Only once in the book does Naish come off as unfair. He correctly points out the agenda of some creationists in encouraging, promoting, and financing African expeditions to find surviving sauropods. He is on firm ground when he says that they are mistaken that any success will somehow further the creationist cause. However, the extended rant he goes on claiming creationists are out to destroy science was over the top. He let his personal feelings get the best of him.

In conclusion, the book is highly recommended. Skeptics will have view endorsed but can profit from the occasions other skeptics jumped to premature conclusions that the author points out. Believers will come away with a better understanding of the mainstream scientific position on these creatures and what does and does not constitute compelling evidence.

Great overview of the subject from the well qualified perspective of a paleozoologist

A very enjoyable read. Naish approaches the subject with the obvious benefit of a lifetime studying animals, living and dead, and in particular, vertebrates and tetrapods. This brings considerable credibility to the discussions of things like plesiosaur fins, pterosaur wings and primate feet. Naish not only understands the anatomical details of numerous animals, he understands how information is gathered from paleontological field work and naturalists' observations of living creatures.

While it is basically in the genre of a "debunking" book, he doesn't do it in a smug or condescending way. Naish tries to seriously engage the claims of cryptozoologists and gives their motivations the benefit of the doubt. Only after considering a range of options does he suggest that certain observations may be deliberate hoaxes.

The basic point is that cryptozoology, or the beliefs in mystery monsters, tell us much more about human beliefs, perceptions and folklore than about possible species new to science.

Entertaining and enlightening Guide to Pipe Smoking!

My 1965 published paperback copy of this book is both enjoyable and enlightening! I found the author's style to be very pleasurable to read. Weber goes into the history of the pipe, the types of tobacco, and the (then newly released) surgeon general's report on tobacco. If you enjoy reading about pipe smoking this book has a great view of the hobby from 45 years ago, which in fact has not changed that much over the years.

Highly unusual and interesting plays!

Elmer Rice's first play was the 1923 production The Adding Machine is an eye opening take on the soul of a man, who for 25 years adds up figures in the sales department, never missed a day of work and gets canned for technology, an adding machine. The play is a satirical take on corporation, the evolution of man as the slave, and the afterlife. Very enjoyable.

Street Scene
No producers wanted to take Rice's Street Scene, produced in 1929, because of the many characters, and many plots. So Rice directed the production of 602 performances. The successful 3-act play consists of 27 main characters, 14 non-essential characters, and several passers-by.

The setting is the exterior "walkup" of a New York ugly brownstone tenement. It's an unusually hot day, and the many neighbors are socializing and gossiping about life, the economy, and each other. Then, a tragedy occurs. This is an engaging entertaining play with excellent dialogue and intriguing immigrant characters.

This is a pretty neat book. It has great 'what you want to know' info about everything cultural, historical, environmental about the camino. I wish it wasn't so bulky - but there's just so much stuff to pack in there! My biggest complaint is that when you are just wading through it's a little hard to weed out what you want to read about from what you don't want to read about. But I guess that's no fault of the authors' since they can't read my mind. :) Great book w/ really cool info. Nice to read before you go - and you wish you could take it w/ you.

A MUST READ for your Spiritual Journey!

My spiritual journey has taken me to many houses of worship, to countless bookstores, to thousands of hours of reading, to purchases at new age shops, to expensive sessions with mediums, to meditation and of course to the worldwide web. I have struggled through Jane Roberts' 'Seth' books, studied 'A Course in Miracles' aligned my chakras and tried to be a sponge and soak up all I could learn.

Yesterday my friend Susan, posted on Facebook about the release of this book 'The Afterlife of Billy Fingers'. I immediately purchased and downloaded it on my Kindle. I followed Billy's journey, thanks to Annie and Billy. I cried and I laughed and I learned a lot, through their journey. This morning when the book ended, I needed MORE! I want to thank the powers that be for the permission they must have given to help Billy be able to tell his story, and also for Annie to be able to hear it.

I wish I had read this book years ago or something like it. The beauty and simplicity and wonder touched my soul unlike all the other books I have ever read before. Trust me when I tell you, I have been reading 2 to 3 books a week since 5th grade and I will be 59 years old this coming Friday.I guess you can say I know what I like when it comes to books. This one was a life changer. If your search brought you here, it was for a very good reason. READ THIS BOOK!

An Exhilarating Experience

Billy Fingers takes us on a jaw-dropping journey through realms I couldn't have imagined and find it hard to believe anyone could make up. This is from a born skeptic. I don't know whether to credit Annie Kagan or Billy Fingers with the spectacular rendering of experiences that must have been very hard to put into words, let alone such consistently dazzling prose. Early on, I let go of whether I believed it and just floated along on the wild and moving ride. The message I took away is that life is an adventure we're meant to have no matter what twists and turns it takes. Thanks to Billy we can now imagine the spiritual universe beyond our spec of a planet and the confines of a mortal body. It's a book I recommend highly and will return to when I find myself thinking small.

Comparing to my NDE.

While the story of the dialogue was very touching, I read it with an open mind but not so open that I was gullible. I had an NDE experience 2 years ago. There were many similarities in this book which I also experienced. While if you read the book and think you are going to find a religious dogma;:ie Pearly gates etc. you are going to be disappointed. However if you are seeking a peek into what it's like in the afterlife? This will give you a taste from one viewpoint. As I tell people today that ask me what my NDE was like I simply tell them that what I experienced may not be what you experience. And for those that have said to me that I was just hallucinating from all the drugs the doctors had me on. I reply to them the drugs that they pumped into me happened truly occurred. But the 25+ minutes my heart stopped and after 3 attempts finally reviving me. I experienced something that has halted my fear of death and enables to me to say to anyone....we have a wonderful afterlife awaiting us. Namaste*

This revision does that with exuberance and bounty, incorporating more than 4000 new entries spoken or written by individuals from a variety of disciplines, philosophies, and cultures. (Some 1,000 entries from the fifth edition are gone.) Quotes are arranged chronologically by the birth year of the figure quoted, providing readers with a panorama of female thought through the centuries. Four indexes facilitate use: person, career and occupation, ethnicity and nationality, and subject. There is a scarcity of contributors born after 1970. Unfortunately, for Sarah Palin, Partnow selected five quotes, all of which have been mocked in the media. Also, out of the 18,000 quotes in the book, Sotomayor's controversial "wise Latina woman" quote appears on the front cover. Still, no other book of quotes comes close to having such an impressive representation of women. Thirty-five years ago, Partnow began her “excavation of women’s history” by compiling collections of quotations by women. This revised edition is her latest and biggest: some 1,350 new contributors and more than 4,000 new quotations (about a quarter of the quotations included in this collection) have been added. Partnow estimates that to make room for these new quotations and contributors, about 1,000 quotations from the previous edition, and even some of the contributors, had to be cut. For that reason, collections owning the earlier edition should keep it. This volume, like its predecessors, is organized chronologically, and each contributor is assigned a number, and within each entry, each quotation is also numbered. There are four indexes (biographical, career and occupation, ethnicity and nationality, and subject), and entries in each of them provide further information on the quoted. An effort was made to include more women from developing nations, resulting in more of the words of women from the African continent, the Middle East, and South Asia. The chronologically arranged quotations provide a kind of survey of women’s history. Reading through them illustrates the concerns and challenges faced by women through the ages, and the variety of careers and occupations represented highlight women’s accomplishments. As one of the best organized and most carefully documented quotation collections currently available in print, this title is recommended for all reference collections. --Carolyn Mulac

Great Resource!

This book is not only fun to thumb through (and there's a lot of it to thumb through), it is a terrific resource. The biographical index of 3,750 women alone makes it worth having. I find myself looking stuff up in it all the time--how old is Gloria Steinem? Where was Golda Meir born? What country did Murasaki Shikibu come from? And then, of course, there are the quotations. Thousands of them. A real help in my work as a researcher. Anyone who enjoys a good reference library shouldn't be without a copy of this book.
