Essential Reading for Indie Film Fans!

A terrific counterpart to John Pierson's "Spike Mike Slackers and Dykes," Phil Hall's indispensable ENCYCLOPEDIA OF UNDERGROUND MOVIES focuses on the true indie cinema as relayed and documented by those who lived it. These are the passionate filmmakers whose wonderful works are only rarely seen or have received marginal distribution. These are the filmmakers who are cranking out 10 films a year, shooting in their basement, spending their money on celluloid and tape stock instead of food - the true mavericks of a little known "cinema" that is alive and well, but yet unknown to most.

Hall's brilliant book also focuses on the film distributors who live on the fringes while struggling to bring these vanguard films to the screen. He even touches upon a brief history of independent film distribution, focusing on such pioneers as Dave Friedman and Dan Sonney.

This is a must read for every filmmaker as well as any fan of independent cinema. Every chapter features fascinating accounts after accounts from filmmakers across the country and their struggles, sometimes humourous, other times inspiring and uplifting, of creating their works and seeing them through to the ultimate battle but artistic gratification of the world of distribution.

The film is better than the book, and Blatty wrote both

I think I've read the Exorcist three times and own the film, which I saw as a teenager and had to sit in the concession area for most of it, it so terrified me. (I think my Dad was a bit freak too, but my Mom made it all the way.)

The film is 100% faithful to the book, a perfect and much more terrifying experience. One thing I noticed this time around in the book is the constant attempts at humor that Blatty includes. The mother, Chris, is often making little jokes and asides, even the midst of some horrific events. This really didn't read well to me and took me "out" of the story since the bad puns, etc just slowed things down. There is quite of bit of Catholic theology tossed around which doesn't elevate the story the way Blatty intended. Also, this is the "original" version of the book, not the rewrite he did a few years ago.

Overall, a great read, but if you've seen the film, you have the better experience of the two.

Insight into horror

After having enjoyed the iconic horror of the landmark film for many years, I decided to delve into the novel on which it’s based. And while I’m an ardent believer that the book is always better than the movie (in almost all cases), in this case, it’s impossible to state unequivocally which is the superior work of art.

The film is, of course, a classic. I need make no argument for that here. The novel? Probably less so. It is, however, noteworthy for a number of elements that the film seems to lack. In the film, the most memorable scenes are those of the possessed Regan spewing out obscenities and vomit while levitating her bed and telekinetically moving furniture. These scenes create comparable horror in the novel, yet the climactic event itself—the exorcism—lasts just 30 pages or so. The novel also offers greater development of Damien Karras, the young Jesuit whose professional interest in Regan’s case troubles him and challenges his faith. Through him, we learn more about the history of demonic possession. Furthermore, minor characters like Kinderman, the police detective, and Karl and Winnie, the McNeil household staff, are more fully developed through subplots.

Blatty’s prose style is rather pedestrian and unremarkable, but it serves the story adequately. The artistry of this novel does not lie in its use of the language but in its power to portray the terror of the supernatural.

Cliche coming: The book is better than the movie

Allow me to start by saying that I am a fan of the macabre and horrific but I tend to lean more towards true crime. I have tried to read horror fiction before with only predictable success (King, Lovecraft, Poe, etc). Interestingly enough, recently my fascination with all things dark and terrifying was taking me down the road of exorcisms and demonic possession and I was searching kindle books for something to "scratch that itch," so to speak, and while I was not looking for fiction and I was not looking for "The Exorcist" specifically, boy am I glad I took the chance. I will say too, because I think it's important to mention, I don't find the movie particularly scary. While the story - the concept for the book and film - certainly is scary, the movie just didn't grip me and scare me like so many said it would (I am willing to acknowledge that I might be slightly more warped than the next guy and this might also be a contributing factor to my lack of fear but I digress). First, very generally speaking, this book is written phenomenally. The characters are complex and brooding. The scenes are dark and rich and you can almost feel the cold, smell the smells, feel the terror. There are some surprises that I didn't recall from the movie that made for some pretty scary moments that ultimately made this book one of my all time favorites! Highly recommended!

The realistic illustrations are of excellent quality with meticulous detail and a wide variety of backdrops. A paragraph of text describes the plane featured on each page. The fact that this is also an alphabet book is almost secondary. For example, B is for B-17, E is for Electra, M is for Messerschmitt, but few of the planes have any markings that associate them with a specific letter. It is unclear as to why, between Q and R, two pages are devoted to the crash of a remote-controlled model airplane. Great for framing!

My two-year-old loves airplanes and I wanted to decorate his room in planes. I bought this book which had 8x10 pages and framed some of the photo's for decoration on the wall. He loves looking at all the airplanes before bed!

The quality of the pages are not very great, they are more of a matte than a shiny material and are not very thick either. The pages would not hold up to a toddler very well but when they are framed on the wall it looks great.

For those wondering, you could not put both A and B on the wall since those letters would be back to back on a single page. So buy two books if you plan on framing all the pages or want to frame a series in alphabetical order.

Absolutely Stunning Illustrations!

My two-year-old son absolutely adores this book, even though the writing is directed at children above his age. He wants to go through the alphabet over and over with me (and yes, there are airplanes for every letter, including the Xandu and the Yak), stopping at his favorites. No jet aircraft are included in this book, with the possible exception of the Osprey, which the text admits is an unusual inclusion in the book; however, both military and civilian propeller-driven airplanes are included.
The text, as I mentioned, is clearly aimed at children older than two. I am very pleased with the text; it is clear and simple but it doesn't talk down to young readers. It gives interesting tidbits of information about the various aircraft and explains the basics of how airplanes fly.
Although each letter is prominantly featured in both upper and lower case, the focus of the book is really not the alphabet. The alphabet forms a backdrop and theme for the gorgeous illustrations of airplanes. The realism and minute detail make this a book older children, who already know the alphabet, would like to possess. In fact, I know quite a few adult aviation fans who would love to receive this as a holiday gift! My son easily spends a half an hour to forty-five minutes just looking at the pictures--a VERY high compliment from any two-year-old.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves airplanes. It would not be my first choice for teaching my son the alphabet, but he is certainly learning to love books and to love airplanes!

Flying High with Jerry Pallotta books!

Our three-year-old grandson borrowed a copy of this book from their local library in Chantilly, VA. He had it memorized in three days! This book even helps him identify airplanes at the nearby Air Museum, Dulles airport. I just HAD to buy a copy for our house when he visits. I also bought some of Jerry Pallotta's other books .... look for these, as well. Thanks, Jerry and all the artists!

Inspiring book

I'm not sure that the word "retire" is what the author meant in this book, and it's not really what I'm looking to do either. I don't want to sit on a couch playing canasta with my old friends all day. What I want is a way not to retire, to live a life free of stress about jobs and money. That's exactly what this book is talking about. In it, the author describes several ways to create an income using investments, small businesses, hobbies, and a bunch of other ideas. While many of them are work, it's work that you can do from anywhere, and can do on your own time at your own speed. This is exactly what I was looking to learn, and this book does a good job of going step by step into describing them.

Also included is stuff on saving, insurance, and other things that I knew, but didn't think of in this light. I'm not going to be able to retire before I'm 40, but I think I'm going to be able to stop working my regular job much sooner than I ever thought possible. And I'm already starting to use some of hte ideas I learned in this book. This book paid for itself with just one idea, I'm glad I read it.

This book was more than I was expecting. Other early retirement books I have read focus only on needing a million dollars and tell you how to invest for retirement.

This book actually shows you how to retire on much much less using techniques that have worked for the author and others. There are some great sections on creating passive online income, protecting your assets, the psychology of early retirement, how to maximise your spending,etc.

I can honestly say that this book has changed my life. I now believe I will take the next step and quit my job to do all the things I have wanted to in my life. Life's short, I plan on going for it.

Great Information!

I bought this book on a recommendation from a friend and I wasn't disappointed. If anything this book gave me hope that I won't need to work until I am 65.

There are several chapters that have information I have never heard of before. The chapter on protecting assets from lawsuits and investing for retirement were especially useful.

This book is a nice alternative to the traditional retirement books with the standard save several million and invest in high income stocks.

This information is more on developing small businesses, using skills, and adapting your life based on your values and lower income, great read.

Book 1 in Mazes for 4 - 6 year olds

Kumon make Maze books for several ages and this one is BOOK 1 out of 3 for children aged 5,6,&7. At least that is what is on the cover.

At this time our 4 year old, who has completed the Kumon maze books before this one, is now halfway through this one. They are easier but do get progressively harder as you continue into the book. If your child is well established with his/her hand/eye coordination and has been doing maze books for a while then I would suggest getting the one up from this. Our 7 year old, is on Book 3 right now and those mazes are way more challenging. Pretty sure our 4 year old could not do them although I know he would tell me differently and want to try if I put the book in front of him!

Great books! One or other of our kids have done them all. The mazes are colorful, the books are sturdy and well made and we have never had a child not want to do one! Highly recommended from our house to yours!

Great fun and good learning!

My son (5) loves all the Kumon books we have tried so far (Numbers 1-30, Capital Letters, Mazes - Animals and Mazes - Things that go). While he normally does not like to practice writing skills, he spends a good amount of time on the Kumon books and I consider them a good investment. His 3 year old sister is very skilled with the mazes as well (we bought her the beginner maze book, also excellent). The quality of the paper and images is superior as well, compared to most activity books out there. Highly recommended.

Orthopaedic Review

A very complete text. However the format is not perfect for study review purposes. There is a lot of wasted space in the text with notes on the left and diagrams and tables on the right and following pages. Sometimes when your scanning, reviewing,you have to flip back and forth to see which diagrams relate to which topic. Other than that it is a fine text.

This is a very good book, as it shows pictures of the procedures and gives a good explanation of why they are done. However, the book I received had a few pages missing. So please fully check your copy when you receive it.

Another Great Story of Love and Redemption by My Favorite Christian Author

Terri Blackstock is absolutely one of my all-time favorite, Christian suspense authors. I have loved every book that I have read by her. I especially loved her Restoration series.

Mrs. Blackstock is a master at building a story with complex characters that seem like real people, your neighbors, friends, and doctors. She writes community into every novel.

Her latest, book Twisted Innocence lives up to her great craftmanship. I just loved this story which brought laughter, fright, and tears (sometimes all on the same page). I wish I had started with other books in the series. This is the third one. The fact that I could pick up the book in a series and understand and follow the plot easily speaks to Mrs. Blackstock’s writing expertise.

She moves us seamlessly from scene to scene and action to action in this story which opens with Holly picking up an unusual couple in her cab who then beat and mug her. Holly was a partying teenager and 20-something until life real-life consequences caught up with her. A bad one-night stand leads to her becoming a single mom who has to work two jobs as a cabbie and private investigator just to make ends meet. The father, Creed, is a drug dealer and partier, the last person Holly would want involved in her and her daughter’s life.

When she learns that he is implicated in a murder, she sets out to capture him herself. Things don’t work out how she envisioned, however. Instead of having him put in jail and thus permanently out of her life; Creed manages to take her and her baby hostage. Then, he flees with them, running from both the police and outlaws who want him dead. He claims he innocent and is being framed by a man named, Leonard Miller. Holly knows that name well because Miller has murdered several of her own family members. Can her family find her before it is too late?

I was provided a copy of this book by Litfuse Publicity Group. I actually volunteered for the campaign just because it was a Terri Blackstock book. Mrs. Blackstock is one of the best Christian suspense authors I have ever read. I have read numerous writers in my life. You just have to read her books. She blesses me everytime I read one. :)

Holly is the consummate bad girl - only she isn't

No book will make you turn pages faster than Twisted Innocence. It has more takedowns than a wrestling match and events move twice as fast. Part of that is due to this book's placement in the series. As the last book in the series, this book centers around Holly, but it also wraps up loose ends from the previous stories.

Holly is the consummate bad girl - only she isn't. Although she spent years rebelling against her Christian upbringing, she's trying hard to stay on the straight and narrow, but that isn't easy when the bullets are flying and her old friends are back in the picture. Her emotional and spiritual journey make for a fantastic backdrop to the action in this story. The contrast really shows just how important it is to stick to our guns - no pun intended - when life gets tough, and this was my favorite part of the story.

The action was pretty cool, though, too. The good guys looked like the bad guys and the bad guys were desperate, which kept the stakes high and the action flying. I'm happy to live a suspense-free life, but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy reading about other people's, and Blackstock excels at these types of stories. She masterfully creates realistic characters and then throws them into action-packed situations, and with bombs, snipers, corrupt cops, and poison, to name a few, Twisted Innocence really has a lot for this cast to survive.

If you're a Blackstock fan, then you won't want to miss her most current masterpiece; and if you haven't read her work before, then this is an excellent book with which to start. Twisted Innocence - it's that and more.

Another Incredible book by Terri Blackstock!

Terri Blackstock is one of my very favorite authors. Her books never fail to capture my attention and keep it. This book is definitely one of her best and I enjoyed it thoroughly! It's part of the "Moonlighters Series" but, not to worry, Terri is such a great writer, you will never feel lost because you didn't read the others in the series. Of course, you're going to want to, because they are excellent!

Holly is a single mother, working toward turning her life around after giving her life to Jesus. She had been a wild child after her father left the family and now she's trying hard to get her life in order. She is working during the day for her sister, Cathy's fiance Michael, who owns a PI business. It's not enough for her to take care of her child properly, so she drives a cab at night while her sister, Juliet, watches her baby. The book opens with her getting robbed and beaten after picking up a couple of meth heads.

Michael is in jail after breaking his probation while helping to save Juliet's children. He is a former police officer who really shouldn't be in jail and Cathy, who is a lawyer, is working to get him probation. They have been set up and their family members killed by one Leonard Miller, a horrible drug lord who brings drugs into Florida.

This is a fast moving story - full of thrills and mystery and some romance. You'll find yourself pulling for this amazing family and their friends as they struggle to live their lives that have changed by the actions of this horrible drug lord. I enjoyed this book so much and stayed up almost all night reading it one night! The story will draw you in and won't let go, even at the last page.

I also really was touched and moved by Terri Blackstock's "Note from the Author". She touched on things that I myself am struggling with and she had so much encouragement to give. Her words won't leave me as they were so encouraging and honest.

I highly, highly recommend this wonderful book! You'll enjoy it immensely! I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Worth the buy

Another great PW cookbook! The photos are stunning as always, the directions are as clear and illustrated as one could want. In response to some previous reviews I have seen where buyers were upset by "all the pictures" and "regular recipes" Please research what you buy before you buy it. If you want a James Beard winner shop that way. Ree is an acomplished "regular" home cook like most of us and presents her very approachable recipes in the same fashion. Good food, beautiful book. Ive never had a recipe Ive tried fail!

A Fun, Romantic Read

I don't read many romantic books, but I really enjoyed reading this fun story of how Ree Drummond and her husband met. Falling in love drastically altered her future life. She has a pleasant writing style, and while her story could have been too cheesy, it's not. Her re-telling made me feel sentimental and brought back emotions that you feel when everything is so new and so uncertain.

Both Ree and "Marlboro Man" as she refers to her cowboy are likeable personalities. I liked the embarrassing stories that she shares of their early relationship, and I understood many of the stresses and heartache in their first year of marriage. I think her writing style is comfortable and relateable, and a nice way to spend a couple of evenings. You can read it fast, and it won't change your life, but you'll enjoy it.
