An Excellent Introductory Text

Since there is currently only one other review, which I find very inaccurate, I will throw in my 2 cents.

First of all, I disagree about the readability of Artin's book. I found the presentations crystal clear, and in particular the proofs are very readable. Artin avoids clever tricks when a straightforward approach is available and does a good job explaining the reasoning behind proofs. There are also enough examples to illustrate the concepts presented.

Second, the exercises in Artin are excellent. They provide a way to become familiar with the definitions and techniques in the chapter, as well as illustrate some interesting applications of the material. There are some easy exercises, and some very difficult ones. I'm not sure what more you could ask for.

As far as Dummit and Foote goes, I agree that it is an excellent text. However, I would prefer Artin as an introductory text, since it is a gentler introduction to all the abstraction. Dummit and Foote is a better for a course beyond an introduction, and also serves as a better reference. Anyway, Artin covers a different set of topics than more "standard" texts such as Dummit and Foote, such as plane symmetries and linear groups.

Overall, I think Artin's book is an excellent introduction to abstract algebra. In fact, the two semester course using Artin that I took (taught by the man himself), was one of the best academic experiences of my life.

Good, challenging book

I used this book in an advanced algebra course in which the students learned on their own with minimal guidance from the professor and discussed the assigned readings and homework once a week. I found this book difficult for self-learning. Artin aims for concision in his proofs, making the reader prove some things on his own. This is not necessarily bad, and is often very helpful for the student's learning. But it can be tough and frustrating if you need a hint, or get lost in a proof. In other words, it's perfectly good to leave steps for the reader, provided that the reader can actually fill in the gaps. For that reason, I think this book is best used as a supplement to a professor's lectures, rather than for self-learning. This book does a good job of condensing the material, and the theorems are easy to find, so it is useful when reviewing. I like the topics in the book. One of the aims of this book is to introduce the reader to the various applications of algebra. To this end Artin includes not only the typical algebra material, but also symmetry and imaginary quadratic fields. Unfortunately I found the second edition worse than the first edition in its chapters on fields. Artin took out many examples in the first edition, for reasons I don't know. The chapter on fields is full of definitions and theorems, but in my mind it doesn't elucidate the main ideas and themes effectively. I think Dummit and Foote is much better at explaining basic Galois theory. The exercises, though, are very good. Overall, this is a challenging book; when used effectively in a well-taught course (for example, see Benedict Gross's excellent free online videos on algebra), it should prove to be very rewarding.

Good bargain, but one chapter missing

Cheaper version printed in India (nothing wrong with that). Warning: the book does not include the last chapter on Galois Theory, so this version is shorter (482 pages instead of 543 pages in the regular 2nd edition). Too bad. Other than that, a good bargain.

Gregory M. Campion, CFA - the Motivator

Gregory Campion, CFA is not a gifted writer, but he is a gifted motivator. I read all of the prior reviews on this book prior to purchasing (the bottom line is that Mr. Campion's book is definitely worth purchasing) and my summation is that the 5 star ratings are a bit too glowing, and the substandard reviews are far too critical.

Essentially, there are two books on the market now that are written by recent CFA charterholders, which makes their "take" on the CFA process more relevant to pre- and existing CFA candidates. Rachel Bryant's book - Direct Path to the CFA Charter - is a far more detailed "blueprint" on how to pass each of the three CFA exams. Nearly twice the length of Mr. Campion's book (though still an easy read), she offers a multitude of very specific recommendations not contained in the CFA Confidential, written from the perspective of someone who actually passed each level on her first attempt.

However, what Mr. Campion offers in this worthwhile book is also of value: it is more of a psychological blueprint on how to pick oneself off the canvas in the face of failure in order to persevere through this difficult process (relevant to most readers is that nearly all CFA candidates fail at least one level). He has the (not unusual) distinction of having failed the exams as often as he passed them. His emotional perspective on the ups and downs of the process are very captivating - I sighed out loud when reading the section of the book where he describes the email he received from the CFA institute notifying him of his failure. Following this disappointment, he appropriately titles one of the final chapters "Back in the Ring" to describe his third attempt to pass Level 3. I could actually here the old ACDC song in the background "Back in the ring............to take another swing" as he described the final leg of his CFA journey.

I found myself personally relating to Mr. Campion on several levels - as I will also be embarking on this journey with an intense family dynamic (i.e. spouse and children). He comes across as an everyday professional seeking some additional respect in the workplace, likeable, and someone you could enjoy a cold birch beer with on your front porch or back deck on a summer afternoon. What he lacks in writing prose, he makes up for in engaging the reader to believe that normal people can achieve a CFA charter if they work hard enough.

While perhaps not intended by the two CFA charterholder authors, Mr. Campion and Mrs. Bryant are an excellent complement to one another.

Realistic and pragmatic

Are you considering enrolling in the CFA® program? Have you passed one or more exams but are stuck on Level Two or Three? Are you the spouse or significant other of someone in the program? If you answered yes to any of these questions, READ THIS BOOK! Gregory Campion tells you what you need to survive the rigors of the CFA® program.

CFA® Confidential is a story of what else is required to pass all three exams in addition to a comprehensive understanding of the curriculum: persistence, organization, consistent study, multitudes of practice exams, family support and humility. Those are the true lessons of his experience.

More than anything, the real gem in this book is the discussion of what to do, and how to keep yourself motivated, if you fail an exam. If you are considering the CFA® program, chances are you are accustomed to succeeding. So is everyone else taking each exam, but the pass rates are low. This program is like no other in finance in terms of difficulty, with the exception of actuarial exams. The majority of test-takers at each level do not pass the first time they take the exam. In an interesting statistic, Campion calculates the recent odds of passing each level sequentially on the first try at about 9%. For many candidates, resilience after an initial failure is what gets them over the finish line. You have to stay in the game. It's an ultra-marathon, not a sprint.

The author discusses the immense volume of material candidates need to master, the frustrations of devoting the better part of each year to studying, the challenges of staying motivated when you fail an exam and the need to juggle work, family, friendships and exam preparation.

While Campion does make some excellent suggestions regarding how to study, he correctly explains that each candidate will have a different study style. There are some good prep providers. There is no magic bullet for preparing for the exams. You have to understand the content and be to apply what you have learned and explain it in the context of the exam format. For those candidates who are aghast at the piles of books on your desk, I am sorry to say that there are no shortcuts! You have go to go through them. However, you can study efficiently, and Campion presents ways to do that successfully that worked for him.

I would have loved to have this book to read before I entered the CFA® program. When I entered the program at the encouragement of a manager who held the CFA® designation, I did not yet have a very clear idea of the time and effort required. Needless to say it is considerable, but worth it. I am sitting for the Level Three exam for the second time in June 2014 and found Campion's book to be just the encouragement I needed to stay motivated.

I don't necessarily agree with Campion that Schweser material makes the best foundation material, although I do use them. I think you have to read the curriculum at least once and do all the end of chapter problems. This can get a bit tricky in the quantitative parts so the prep provider chapters for those topics can be a real lifesaver. I do agree strongly with Campion that you have to take as many practice tests as possible.

I liked this book and found it informative, realistic and useful. I don't know the author -- I found out about the book from a forum on LinkedIn. Thanks to Greg for writing it, and for sharing his experience.

Very useful

This is required reading if you are thinking of pursuing the CFA designation. Greg is very honest and upfront about what it takes to pass these brutal exams as well as a few strategic points which are not to be overlooked. The chapter on CFA vs. MBA will be quite useful to those thinking about a career in Finance and which option to choose or perhaps both. Having passed 2 of these exams and getting ready for Level 3 exam next June, I can tell you that many of his suggestions are right on point.

What can you expect when someone is so unimaginative as to copy the title of a bestseller probably wishing that some people will make a mistake. Do not be confused this is NOT Bob Sutton's book "Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to Be the Best... and Learn from the Worst". If you want to learn only from the worst then buy it.

Are the author and her publisher unaware that Bob Sutton wrote a best-seller entitled "Good Boss, Bad Boss - How to Be the Best...and Learn from the Worst" last year? I would hope that this was an honest mistake, and not an attempt to ride the coattails of Professor Sutton's excellent work.

I read this book in the early 90's and continue to refer to it when I want to understand or explain to others why people interact with their family members in ways that clearly seem not to be in their own best interest. About the Author
Dacher Keltner is a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and the faculty director of the UC Berkeley Greater Good Science Center. A renowned expert in the biological and evolutionary origins of human emotion, Dr. Keltner studies the science of compassion, awe, love, and beauty, and how emotions shape our moral intuition. His research interests also span issues of power, status, inequality, and social class. He is the author of the best-selling book Born to Be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life and of The Compassionate Instinct.

Interesting Theory, Poor Writing

I became interested in reading this book after listening to a Dacher Keltner interview on the Marketplace radio show. While Keltner's hypothesis is interesting, the book turned out to be fairly disappointing. In particular, Keltner's writing style and lack of organization make the book hard to follow and seemingly very redundant - it is almost like he started writing it at 5:30pm on Friday and completed the manuscript at 5:30pm on Sunday. The book is really short and feels like it is just full of fluff. What I found to be the most irritating is the lack of citations within the text itself. While there are several pages of end notes, none of them is actually mapped to the corresponding citation in the text. This makes it hard to independently research or verify the hundreds of little experiments that Keltner relies on throughout the book to prove his theory. He literally rattles off these experiments which he presumably conducted throughout his years as a professor and devotes a couple sentences to each. We should all be skeptical of these flimsy psych department experiments that involve college students and pizza. Unfortunately for Keltner, he seems to build his whole thesis on these sorts of experiments. This fact, coupled with flat writing, makes this book a real disappointment.

I couldn't put it down!

I read the book cover to cover while flying on a plane from Hartford to Chicago. It's a wonderfully hopeful and optimistic account of how good people can and do attain power. There is a lot to digest in the book, which is beautifully written and vivid in its imagery and examples. Read this book for the writing and be surprised about what you learn about using power to improve society and the lives of others.

A compelling call to action to understand power better and use it wisely

Fascinating, easy-to-read and useful book on an important topic in society, especially in our VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world. We all need to realize that we give power to others and get it from them too. Furthermore, we also need to understand that the source of enduring power is from practicing empathy and giving.

It's too easy for adults to shake their heads about young people not being as empathetic as they used to be, as research shows. But it's easy for us adults -- especially those in powerful positions -- also to lose empathy, as the neuroscientist can now demonstrate.

The author Dacher Keltner does everyone a great service by explaining four social practices that make sure we use our power for good: empathizing (even when it's hard), giving, expressing gratitude and telling stories.

Besides helping us understand how power works and sharing these four practices that focus on others, the author makes another major contribution -- explaining the price the powerless pay for their lack of influence. We need to be much more empathetic about this, and start to change the imbalance of power.
