A must have for hydrogeologists!

This is a great book for students and professionals alike. Starts with the very basics of water chemistry and covers almost everything that one could think of. What sets this book apart from other chemical hydrogeology books is the extensive integration of PHREQC and the many links to free useful applications and graphing tools. I highly recommend this book.

The figures are original, clear, and appropriate, and the text follows an intellectually solid, but very readable format. Definitely a requisite book for the student and professional.

It worked!

I have been fearful of asserting myself at work for quite a while now, but also recognize that I have lost out in some cases because I haven't been able to effectively assert myself. With this book, I feel much more confidant. There are lots of examples including specific dialogue on what to say in certain instances. As the author maintains, asserting yourself doesn't mean a nag or being overly aggressive or being someone that others don't want to be around. Instead it means being effectively assertive which is standing up for your rights without trampling on the rights of others. Who could argue with that?

This book offers comprehensive information on how to speak up for yourself in a variety of circumstances. If somebody is deficient in these areas, it never hurts to learn new skills or return to the basics. My favorite chapters were the ones on being assertive at work and with your boss and with your coworkers. I also liked the ones on dealing with the government and being an assertive consumer. Those two chapters are probably the most valuable in the whole book.

Great Book

I was tired of being a doormat at work, so I picked up this book. Thankfully, it's loaded with types of situations in which I find myself and offers useful strategies for making my thoughts and opinions known. The author gives specific examples and specific language, which I like a lot. I've read some of the previous reviews, and I'm not sure what their beef is. There's more than enough information and strategies in this book to satisfy any novice sort of reader.

There are a lot of cobra books out there especially since over the last 3-4 years there has been a surge in interest of the aircraft. I have owned this book for about as long and I never get tired of reading it. What I find the most interesting portion of it is reading about the Marine AH-1T pilots during the operation in Grenada. Mike Verier really knows how to put together a great book. Highly recommended if your a Snake fan.

Back to the basics

I was looking for a book that anyone could read, and I found it. The math is minimal, the concepts understandable, and the illustrations add to the understanding. If you're looking to start making talking, thinking machines, look elsewhere. But if you want to gain an understanding of the basis for artificial intelligence, this is a place to start.

Best Tung book currently available

This book has made the rounds in my Acupuncture office and every single person, even non-Tung style practitioners, have fallen in love with it. The explanations are concise and illuminating; however, it's the appendix that make this worth its weight in gold. This is the first book I've found which is specifically designed for quick look-ups in the reference section for all types of western medical AND TCM pattern conditions. You don't have to hunt and peck through text to find what point may treat what conditions; it's clearly laid out. Each point has a discussion as to why it works and there are even "special recommendations" which include references to how other well-known practitioners (Miriam Lee, Susan Johnson, Young, etc) use the points in their own practices.

Not the greatest guide

I was very disappointed in this book. My longterm boyfriend and I were looking for new and interesting ideas to liven up our sex life. This book seems to be more geared for first timers or the very timid. Also, the pictures weren't explicit at all and the positions were very self explanatory so its almost as if the pictures are not needed, like in a health book with too many official names and explanations of what each part does. My opinion would be, don't waste your money unless you are looking for a cheap health lesson.

Wow! So much in such a small package!!

This little pocket (or pillow) book is written and illustrated in an open, informative style that an individual or couple will find both interesting and fun. Ms Hooper adds specific comments to nearly all the illustrations that are most welcome and helpful.
For the text, illustration, and comments, this little book is great buy and most certainly one you will refer to again and again.

Found this on accident

A boy I dated had it on his nighttable, which I found a tad sleazy at first, until I read it...it was the perfect little gift book, tasteful but insightful. It was a lot of fun to flip through it and say, "Hey, that's one of my moves!" and "Hmmm, THAT'S a great idea!" Of course, the boy I dated apparently got a lot of use out of it...with the other girl he was sleeping with. Well, I'm no longer dating that boy, but finding that book was worth the trouble. And my NEW boyfriend has already extended him a thank you.

The Geek's Guide to Dating

The Geek's Guide to Dating is a quick, funny, and educational journey through the world of relationships, but geek style! It uses lots of references to various aspects of pop culture, and draws parallels between them and dating, which surprisingly made a lot of sense. Thinking about finding your own Player Two as a videogame quest was actually quite helpful and put things into an easy to understand perspective. I'm a single geek and the idea of getting out there and dating is quite cumbersome, but after finishing this little guide, it seems more fun and doable.

The target audience of The Geek's Guide to Dating is straight male geeks, but I do think many of tips are applicable to women and even gay geeks (although non-geeks may be out of luck). There is a blurb within the first chapter to address "gal geeks," so that was nice, and it's true that you only need to switch around a few pronouns to make it relevant to you if you are not in fact a straight male. Although I do think this could have been better and even more helpful if the advice had been gender and sexuality neutral, with a few specific sections for women or non-straight people. Geeks come in all types!

In general, I found the advice given in The Geek's Guide to Dating to be good and organized in a logical manner (geeks love logic!). It starts with addressing yourself first, which is great, since of course, you need to know exactly what you want and have to offer in a relationship. Then it goes through how to meet a potential partner, asking them out, first date ideas, and taking it to the next level. There's also a chapter on dumping and being dumped, and how to get back out there after a failed relationship! The one section I had a problem with was on what to wear on the first date. I do agree that you should you look your best, but there were too many clothing don'ts. I think you should look presentable and wear something appropriate for the date activity, but you also need to be yourself! I was kind of annoyed that hoodies were on the do not wear list, since I literally have a closet with just hoodies in it. I'm a geek gal who loves her hoodies (zip-ups not pullovers).

The Geek's Guide to Dating was pretty great. It's packed full of a lot of straightforward advice, and I loved the use of videogame lingo to explain the different aspects of relationships. I didn't get all of the references, but I doubt many geeks will be well versed in every single game, comic, movie, and TV show out there. A lot of the tips are common sense, but I do think the way it's presented makes it feel fresh and more usable in real life.

Very fun, but male-specific

Honestly, I grabbed this book as soon as I could because the cover is AMAZING! When a friend of mine had also received a copy, I figured it would be a fun read and chat book. This does hit that mark. It is a lot of fun to talk about, but I'm not certain that it actually fits the dating advice genre for a female. This is extremely centered on a male audience and Smith admits that it will be within his introduction. With that being said, figuring out what type of Geek I am and then enjoying all of the references through the book made it worth reading. For people looking for a fun read, this is humorous and engaging. For those looking for some real Geek dating advice, I would probably continue searching.

A fun pick for geeks

I am a Geek. A proud Geek! My idea of romance is to watch Battlestar Galactica with my spouse who is a fellow geek. The book hit home at right places. It's difficult for me to laugh while reading something (come to think of it, it's difficult for me to feel any emotion while reading, I hardly get emotional in general-- Han!) But this book made me laugh at least at 3 different places.
My favorite one was definition of sex-- Sometimes things go well and you make a connection that leads to a free exchange of ideas (or DNA)
Definition of Attraction-- So once you have spotted a life form you'd like to know better
I laughed aloud when I read it.
So, yes, if you are a Geek (not a mere mortal) and want to know how your fellow species members FEEL or THINK that they are feeling and vise versa before they copulate, pick this book.

What to expect of 'Corpus'

I hovered on three or four stars. It's .. how can I say .. tending to the lyrical rather than the analytical - and that's good in many ways - Writing freely, from a very rich vocabulary and range of implicit references is Nancy's way of avoiding tramping, one more time, down the same old 'mind/body' track of discourse.

Maybe the thing to say is this - it is the sort of writing that gives back its rewards in the same measure as you bring your own good philosophy to it.

FROM "BAD-POETRY" TO "PROFOUND-ANTI-PHILOSOPHY":

this is my 7th reading of Nancy; I am a huge fan of his thought. But I want to give a helpful and honest account of this work, without my bias. If you have not already studied Nancy, you should not make this book your first reading. STOP; and purchase this book instead: "the sense of the world" . If you have studied Nancy to some degree already, then: PROCEED.

all post-modern thinkers emphasize the fact that "significance -of-spirit" cannot be articulated in language. But they have to write books and essays presenting this fact; so they are left on the edge of the void-point, looking for new words. Since none exist; they engage in poetic-writing to express their ideas. "Some" of this is allowed. Let's be fair about that. But the over-use and obscure-use of poetic language is not allowed in an academic text. The beginning of this book is a "dark-comedy", as the other reviewer of this book emphasizes. I agree with that review. It helped me to stay objective. Bravo, for writing an honest critique. But I'll go a step further and call this dark-comedy - "bad-poetry". The beginning of this manuscript completely evacuates the reader from the void-point, where Nancy prefers that the reader remain. It is very frustrating and can be endured only if you already have internalized his system; so you cannot be lost.

But, staying un-lost is important; because , later he returns to a "teachable void-point" and actually clarifies previous concepts he had left unclear during his dominance during the years of 1993 to 1997.

key additions to this manuscript that the Nancy fan will want to appropriate are: (1) a better articulation of the metaphor of "wound"; (2) an explanation of extended space as AREOLA; which is fascinating and provides a beautiful thought-picture; (3) a progression of selfhood which is more structured, moving through: PSYCHE to SOUL to EGO to SUBJECT to WORLD.

He also addresses the fulfillment of system as "black-hole" on the directional side and "transfigured-body" on the sensate side.

I remain a Jean-Luc Nancy fan and strongly endorse this book for those already familiar with his work. 5 stars...

p.s.: GOOD-POETRY: NANCY'S BOOK DOES "END" WITH EXCELLENT POETRY WITH HIS CONCLUDING ESSAY: "THE INTRUDER"; HIS POETRY OF "HEART-TRANSPLANT".

MYTHOLOGY: Nancy's philosophy is always divided into two parts; a "psychology" and a "mythology". In "the sense of the world", he gave us the mythology of the "void-point". In this book, he gives us the "mythology-of-the- mystical - body". It is delivered briefly in pages 150-161. Just 11 pages; but jammed with content. Do not ignore this material. It is an essential part of "corpus".

The primary essay in this work, Corpus, reminds me a little of that comedian who would smash melons, scattering seeds and fruit flesh everywhere. Under the hammer here, to be both pounded and enlarged, is Corpus, the body. The writing is ebullient and intelligent, the rhetoric takes flight.
