About the Author
S.E. Foulk was born in Camden, NJ, attended Eastern High School in Voorhees, and moved to Hawaii when he was 26. After meeting his wife and having a son there, he enrolled in the University of Hawaii and graduated in 2000 with a degree in Computer Science. He first encountered a copy of Dante's Inferno in 1976, when he was just 13 years old, becoming permanently obsessed with the Infernal landscape. He started writing his first book, AngelFall Book I - A Novel of Hell, in March of 2007 as a 'short' background story for a video game, and it developed into The AngelFall Series almost immediately. He currently resides in Newark, California with his wife and son. He has 2 children, and 2 grandchildren.

I admit: I read this book by accident. A friend recommended the Angelfall series to me, so I downloaded these books from Amazon and read them quickly before I realized I was reading the wrong books. But I'm glad I did.
The story mostly follows Aristotle who lives in Dante's version of Hell and happens to have been placed in Limbo, where he grows restless. Aristotle begins to explore the lower levels of Hell, where we encounter the Hell that Dante describes. Why is he wandering? Well, that's the rub... It seems that this story is truly one story and not three, although it is published in three parts - so this edition (as does part 2) ends abruptly and awkwardly. The next edition picks immediately up where this one left off (literally, it is the next page turn) and so there is a chance to get right back into the story -- as long as you have the next part ready at-hand. Unfortunately, part 3 seems to be where we get some answers and it hasn't been published yet (the last page of book 2 says that book 3 will be available December 1, 2011 but it is currently December 22, 2011 and it has not been published yet).
I found the story very interesting and the visualizations of Hell and its inhabitants very robust and the interpretations of some of Dante's imagery fun. It was a quick read and I was very eager for the next part.
However, I cannot give it 5 stars because this "book" is incomplete - it's really more about laying the groundwork for the players, etc. which would be fine, if there were more to it. But the ending is so abrupt and unsatisfying that without the next edition on-hand, I couldn't give it high marks. Also, as other reviewers have pointed out, there are a quite a lot of grammar and spelling errors that took me out of the story.

The saga begins ...

This is a tough review for me to write. I won a copy of this book in the GoodReads book givewaway, and whilst I am very grateful to the author. S E Foulk for donating a copy for my reading pleasure and would therefore like to proclaim it brilliant and leave it at that, there were pros and cons that in balance led to my final verdict of 'it was okay'.
First let me start with the positive; the story itself is set in the world of Dante's Inferno, and as such taps into a rich source of powerfully evocative mental imagery. It's not so much a retelling of the classic as a new story set in the same place (namely the underworld). Various familiar characters are introduced and their journeys set in motion, and the shifts between narrative threads injects an element of suspense that keeps the pages turning nicely. There is no doubt the story itself is an interesting one, and as it is the first of six books there are plenty of unanswered questions left to entice readers to purchase subsequent volumes.
Before discussing what I felt to be the weaker aspects, I'd like to take a moment to give some background on the writing of the books. As I mentioned, this particular book is the first in a series of six that were originally intended to be the rationale for a video game. Foulk ended up investing in slightly more than the anticipated ten pages, and arrived at a story that he felt was worthy of publishing in its own right. He went down the route of self-publishing, and more importantly self-editing, and I think this is the source of my disappointment with the book.
Foulk himself points out in his blog for the series that self-editing is painful, arduous, and perhaps not the best way to go when writing a novel. I have never tried to write a book, and therefore have never experienced having to edit my own creative writing or having someone else do it for me, but I can't help but feel that if the book had been put under the scrutiny of a professional editor the end result would have been much more entertaining. Don't get me wrong; as I said before the story itself is fascinating. It's just that the writing style is so clinical I felt no emotional attachment to any of the characters or their plight, and for me that spark of empathy, sympathy or at the very least an understanding of a character's motivations is what makes a book memorable and enduring.
To me this clinical style, which focuses heavily on literal description of events, environments and character interactions, is what is holding the work back from being something truly inspiring, engaging and entertaining. To me it still reads like the background plot to a computer game where lots of plot needs to be filled in as quickly as possible. In my humble (and in no way expert) opinion, the story so far could easily have warranted a book twice the size, and giving it the extra breathing room to develop would have made it a much more enjoyable read.
The best way of describing this book is to compare it to watching a really good TV show with the volume turned up as loud as it will go - it leaves you satisfied, if slightly stunned and breathless!

Interesting read

I downloaded the three book set on a recommendation from a friend. I'm glad I did. Usually when I finish a book, I'll wait until at least the next day before starting another. This series I just kept on going. It was almost like I was afraid I was going to miss out on something. The worst part of the series was the end of 'Book III' when it said to be continued in 'Book IV'.
