About the Author
Arabella Carter-Johnson is Iris Grace's mother and a professional photographer. In 2008, she and her husband Peter-Jon settled in the rolling hills of Leicestershire where Arabella grew up. Arabella and Peter-Jon's daughter, Iris Grace, was born in 2009 and their lives changed forever. Arabella has documented their journey through diary entries and photographs and now tells Iris's story in her first book.

Eloquently written. Beautiful photos!

I was initially drawn to the posts about Iris Grace because I have always been intrigued by the way autistic children react to their world, how they learn and the relationships if any that can be forged by autistic kids and their caregivers. I had therefore been keenly interested about Iris Grace on Facebook and was anxiously awaiting the book which would have given me some insight into this family and their dealings with an autistic child. I couldn't put down my kindle edition until it was completely read by 2.30 am. It was that good. I knew the basic details from Facebook but reading the book and being drawn in to the struggles, the frustrations, the resilience, the determination, the errors, the breakthroughs and the ups and downs of a family determined to survive with an autistic child was incredible. Ms. Johnston pulls you into this narrative from the first page. We are invited into her life, her home and she shares these intimate details of her relationship with her autistic daughter so that we have a clearer understanding of children on the autistic spectrum through Iris Grace. One is led to a clearer understanding of the frustrations, the anger, the pain and the few moments of exquisite joy that a parent of an autistic child experiences. An added bonus are Iris 's beautifully rendered artwork and colorful pictures that capture an inside peek into this special family.
A book that is well worth the read and very highly recommended for teachers, parents and anyone interested in how children learn.

She needed a place to be creative like Iris and reading the book

I have followed Iris and Thula's journey on Facebook. I didn't realize that I had started following her soon after Iris' family received the diagnosis. My daughter, while not on the spectrum, also had difficulties and I, as a sleep deprived and stressed out mother, felt so much relief from Arabella's posts and was inspired by her to find other ways to connect with and nurture my daughter. We turned our front room into a 'zen' calm down room and the walls are a bit impressionist so I had hung Iris' post card set around. The room has transitioned since to a craft room. I know she's oceans away and we've never met, but Arabella's garden room inspired me to be more in tune and aware of my daughter's needs. She needed a place to be creative like Iris and reading the book, I realized that their facebook posts inspired me to take the leap of faith and make it happen. In the book, you can feel her strength as a mother- her fear, her love, her passion. You can relate. Arabella's not perfect- she's a real person and she has up and down days, but the photos are magical and the story is powerful and the book has it all. This family is amazing. The bond between Thula and Iris is beautiful, and I loved reading about Arabella and PJ's history and Arabella's connection to animals and nature as a child. Iris is lucky to have so much support and love and to have received the creativity of both of her parents.
I ordered the book on the kindle because I could not wait for it in the mail. I am glad I did, but I think I might need a hard copy too eventually. If you're on the edge, just listen to me--- DO IT! Add it to your cart and then follow her on facebook!

Amazing! A must read!!

An amazing little girl and her wonderful parents who took the time to understand their daughters world and how music, a kitty, books and nature can connect her world and theirs together. Gives a new perspective to Autsim. Loved this book!! I look forward to another book to read about Iris Grace and Thula progress and journey! Bravo to her mother's difficult journey learning how to connect with her daughter. Thank you for sharing this story!!!
