Review
"Mr. Sullivan continues to impress. In Royce and Hadrian he has created some of the best characters the genre has seen in some time, and in Avempartha he shows that he knows what to do with them. These books should be in every bookstore and I really hope that they are someday." (Speculative Fiction Junkie)

From the Author
Welcome to the second book in The Riyria Chronicles. I've received many emails and seen forum posts from people asking, "When is the third book in The Riyria Chronicles being released?" I guess trilogies are so common in fantasy that many assume this was one of them, but this series was written as a duology (with the potential to be expanded) and both books were released in 2013.
The Rose and the Thorn's genesis started with a short story I wrote back in October 2011 called The Viscount and the Witch where Royce and Hadrian first meet Viscount Albert Winslow. At the time my released books were in a bit of a limbo state as my self-published versions of Revelations had been removed from the market to make way for the Orbit books that were available for pre-order but not yet released. When I decided to write a prequel, the obvious choice was to start with that short story, and in fact The Viscount and the Witch appears as the second chapter of that book. As I neared its completion, I realized I hadn't gone back far enough in time (I had to write how Royce and Hadrian first met) and so The Crown Tower came into existence.
The two prequels work nicely together, filling in the details of incidents only lightly hinted at, and fleshing in the background of some of my favorite characters from Revelations that didn't get as much screen time that I would have liked. I could easily wrap things here, but I do have more stories about the pair running around my head that I would love to get "out there." The issue is I don't want to be "that guy" who doesn't know when to quit, and I would rather Royce and Hadrian leave early than stay too long. As such, I'm in a holding pattern with regards to committing to future Riyria books.
What to write next is a bit of a moot point at the moment. Currently I'm in the middle of my next trilogy (tentatively titled The First Empire) which should keep me occupied until April 2014. At that time I'll be ready to start my next book, and I'll be reviewing feedback from readers to determine if there should be more Royce and Hadrian or whether I should concentrate on something else entirely. If you would like to "weigh in" drop me an email at michael.sullivan.dc@gmail.com or you can answer a short survey found at michaeljsullivan.polldaddy.com/s/future-writing-feeedback-html.
For those who are concerned I don't want to write more abut the pair, I can lay your fears to rest. I wouldn't offer future Riyria books as an option if I didn't have compelling stories to tell and a desire to bring them to life. The only thing I know for certain, is that I'm going to continue writing. It's my favorite pastime and I have more stories in my head than I have years left on this earth to write. So I'll keep writing, and hopefully there will be some people that will keep reading.

Love Riyria, as always!
By Sparkly Fluff
As I knew I would, I loved this book! I love any excuse to get into this world.
As I said in my review of The Crown Tower I still think that The Riyria Chronicles are best read AFTER The Riyria Revelations. I don't think you will really be spoiled for anything in the longer series if you don't, but I think my own experience was more satisfying that way. The manner in which each character is introduced in The Riyria Revelations series and the back story that is offered is absolutely enough to make that set of books complete and wonderful. The Riyria Chronicles books are like little extra treats that give you even more background and more reasons to love the Riyria Revelations. I'm still not sure if I would love The Riyria Chronicles as much if I hadn't read The Riyria Revelations first.
It really is great to see Royce and Hadrian at this point in their partnership, just one year after their first adventure in The Crown Tower. They are settling in, getting used to each other, but still not 100% sure of what drives the other.
I enjoyed learning more about Hilfred and the resolution of Gwen's problems with some of the misogynistic locals. It was also fun to see the young Pickerings!
I really hope this will not be the last Riyria adventure we get!

Another Great Riyria Story!
By Andrea T.
First, let me say that I do not get tired of these books. They're fun reads, touching on serious subjects and containing emotional moments without ever making the ride less fun. The cast of characters are incredible, and the world is an interesting take on a fantasy setting. These are awesome books to read if you're coming off something really heavy, and just awesome books in general. (I never seem to be able to write a review for one without being like "just read them all.")
Anyway, I will say that I didn't think the pacing was quite as good in this one as some of the other entries in the Riyria universe. I think for me the POV almost changed a little too rapidly at times. It's something to note, though I didn't find that it distracted me from the story overly much. I finished it in less than two days.

I've been looking forward to this book for almost a year
By Amazon Customer
After reading the Riyria Revelations, I was depressed that I wasn't going to read anything more with my favorite character, Hadrian Blackwater. After the prequel books were published I fell in love all over again.
Michael Sullivan does a wonderful job of keeping the details the same as in the Revelation series. It doesn't feel like this book was tacked on as extra, but rather is a part the series. It's evident that he had this whole story including the background story fleshed out before he even considered writing the prequels.
Rose and The Thorn gave me a lot of satisfaction because not only did I get more of my favorite hero, but I got a little bit of future information that happens after the Riyria Revelations! That in itself made reading the book worth it all the more!
