About the Author
Dr. Kim MacLin is Associate Professor of Psychology and Law at the University of Northern Iowa. She received her Ph.D. in the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Social Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. She teaches Introductory Psychology, Psychology & Law, Social Psychology, and Research Methods. She was a recipient of the 2005 Outstanding Teaching Award for Untenured Faculty. Her research interests focus on criminal appearance stereotypes, the source of those stereotypes, and how those stereotypes impact memory and decision making in a variety of legal contexts.

Experimental Psychology Textbook

I had to order it for my Experimental Psychology class. It is falling apart. Pages are coming lose, sections of the book are separating from the binder, and I still have another month of class. Authors need to think about a better binding system for this very expensive book. Not only that, the flow of the text needs to be revamped. A section is started on one page with a totally different section on the bottom of the same page and you have to determine which text goes with which on the subsequent pages. If this doesn't make sense, neither does the layout of this book.

this textbook is very convenient due to its small size and detailed information, it gives many actual case descriptions and examples. it is very research based and the information is very detailed and easy to understand, it does not have many tables and graphs for visual stumulation, i wish it did because then it would be a 5 star vote from me, but apart from this informality it is an excellent and informative learning and teaching device, especially after taking into consideration the degree of the subject itself. those of you who are required by your prefessors to purchase this book, as was i, you will not be dissatisfied in any way, shape or form. good luck and all the best wishes from me.

This book has one of the worst layout designs I've ever seen

This book has one of the worst layout designs I've ever seen. It seems to jump all over the place so you have no idea where you are reading. One of the chapter was broken up into the top half of the page across pages and the bottom half of the page across pages. The "cal louts" don't really stand out much from the rest of the text and the breakup of text and case studies is unclear. All in all, there may be good information in the book, but trying to figure out what on earth I'm reading and where the next sentence is going to be on the next page makes it really difficult to sort through whether the information is useful.

About the Author
Paul Thompson A seasoned make-up artist and instructor in all aspects of professional make-up artistry with over seventeen years of experience; twelve of which has been spent in the classroom helping students become professional make-up artists. Paul started his career in the late 1980's representing a cosmetic line and creating puppets for small industrial films, eventually moving on to feature films and commercials. From there, he started his own special make-up effects lab, Creature Creations, which has since become Mud/fx Group. As his career turned to teaching, Paul also co-founded Make-up Designory. Serving as the Director of Education, he was resposible for the development of the training program.

Excellent comprehensive book

I love this book, and I have been using it in my makeup classes for several years. The full color photos are easy to follow, the techniques in the book are up to date and reasonably easy to replicate. Highly recommended!

I like this - substantial without being pretentious and over done. Keep It Simple(kiss) mindset I think.

I liked it. This is a textbook. I would love to get my hands on a more recent publication if there was one to be had. I teach cosmetology. I buy every text I can find from any used bookstores, amazon, etc. This is classic. It isn't beautiful pictures and great photography. It is black and white and gray illustrations that have arrows and labels pointing to the exact spot referenced in the text. This book does well to explain the why, the how, and what a person needs to practice in order to develop and/or refine their skills.

About the Author
Kelly Blessinger is the Reference Assistant Coordinator at Louisiana State University (LSU) Libraries. In this role, she assists in the daily supervision and operation of the department. She organizes training for all new hires in the department and coordinates continuing education for the library. She served on the Library Mentoring Committee, the Library Faculty Policy Committee, the LSU Faculty Senate, and currently, the University Council on Women.

Paul Hrycaj is an Instruction and Reference Librarian at LSU. He has served on the American Library Association Instruction Section Planning Committee, the LSU Library Faculty Policy Committee, and the LSU Faculty Senate. Paul has been chair of and participated in numerous search committees and has given presentations to LSU Libraries’ faculty and staff on the process of hiring new faculty members.

Biological fluid dynamics - first of its kind

A honest truth is that, to can understand the concept in this book, you must need the help of an expert like your professor or TA. The material is hard to follow, many of the proofs are incomplete/ or lack adequate steps. The assumptions are not explicity made, which will lead you to ponder on one problem for many hours.

But the book has a very nice mixture of engineering concepts (fluid dynamics) and its biological relavance, the first of its kind. Although conceptiouly it is very hard, the mathematical models presented are phenomenal and are presented with great care. To be sucessfully in the course, you must need a good balance in both attending the lectures as well as reading the book.

Fluid Mechanics

This book is very vague in some of the proofs that it contains, however if you have a good understanding of differential equations and some thermodynamics it is fairly easy to follow along, it does make a lot of assumptions that it doesnt explain, so there will be times when you are left scratching your head about a statement they have made, would be nice if it included an index to reference material within the book, i have found it useful in my work (biochemical engineering), however it is not a book i would recommend buying unless you have a working knowledge of the area or someone who does to help you

Can't recommend this book

This is the weirdest German cookbook I have seen. Being German and having two cooks as parents, I am not impressed. A number of the German titles in parenthesis make you want go, "um, what"?

For example, Zweibelkuchen? It is Zwiebelkuchen. And where is the yeast in the dough? And poppy seeds, really? It is caraway seeds, not poppy seeds. They help prevent gas.
Knoephia Dumpling - does he mean Knoepfla dumpling? Get your spellings right, dude!
Mushroom soup - this recipe is basically hot water with some mushrooms, a few sprinkles of parsley and salt. Bon appetit!
Deutsche Knoedelsuppe? It's not Knoedelsuppe - it's Griesnockerlsuppe!

I could go on, but what's the point. Don't waste your money. You can get authentic recipes from a lot of websites. If it has to be a an actual book, try Grandma's German Cookbook by Linn Schmidt and Birgit Hamm, The German Cookbook: A Complete Guide to Mastering Authentic German CookingMay 5, 2010 by Mimi Sheraton or anything els, but this one. This one actually gets two stars, since the author did get a few recipes right.

Any information about tires is a treasure!

The tire is the most important part of an automobile, and the least covered by the literature. That's why any information about tires is a treasure. The complexity of the structure and behavior of the tire are such that no complete and satisfactory theory has been propounded. Books on vehicle dynamics are available but they are mostly written by academics who emphasize mathematical rather than clear explanation of how things really work. The tire might be the most useful and complicated device humans make, but the tire manufacturers provide no useful information to their customers. People are forced to buy tires mainly on the basis of price and company reputation. Even race teams get tire data only sporadically, and that data is pretty useless anyway. Tire performance is necessarily highly dynamic, but tire data comes mainly from testing under static conditions.

This book describes basic properties of components of the rubber compound, carbon black reinforcement, and so on. It also shows mechanical model for rubber: "If you apply a cyclic force the rubber will deform mostly like a spring and give back the force applied to it, but also partly like a damper which is sensitive to the speed (frequency ) of the applied force". The book breaks rubber friction into adhesion (molecular bonding) and mechanical keying (deformation friction). Mechanical keying becomes more important when the road surface is lubricated by dust, water or ice; here is where another interesting property of rubber, viscoelasticiity comes into play. "Press your thumbnail into a street tire and the rubber rebounds. Press it into a racing tire and the mark stays there, recovering only slowly. This is a simple but crude test of hysteresis, or energy loss, in rubber". The book analyzes surface texture effects on rubber friction - how the slope of the asperities affect friction, and "the myth of off-line in the rain". Tire behavior is another major issue of the book.

The last 75 pages of the book (chapter 11) are not directly about tires, and devoted to "Basic Vehicle Dynamics", in case if you don't have an appropriate book on that topic, e.g. "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics" by Milliken Bill and Doug.

I also recommend "Mechanics of Pneumatic Tires". It is a PDF that you can freely download from the publisher's website using an internet search engine. This PDF is an excerpt from "Theory of Ground Vehicles, 3rd Edition" by J. Y. Wong.

A technical book that you can't put down?

Beleive it or not, this technical book had me glued to its pages like a great work of fiction. Haney is an excellent writer, and the 'meat' of the text is intertwined with great real-world stories and examples from motorsport. Interviews with Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney, as well as other less famous but no less competent vehicle dynamic experts are included.
The first part of the book is everything you could have ever imagined you'd like to know about tires. There are explanations and insights into tire manufacturing and testing that I don't think you could find anywhere else. If you are into any form of motorsport you realize how important tires are; this book will help you understand how tires function and, even more importantly, how to use this information to go faster!
The second section of the book is basic vehicle dynamics. If you're well read, most of that will be review. But for beginners, I think the way Haney starts with tire dynamics and works ino the vehicle is very natural and a good way to learn for the first time.
This book is technical but easy to read, contains information and discussion that will be enjoyable for veterans yet not overwhelm newcomers to vehicle dynamics. Even if you have a large library I promise you this book will remain one of your all-time favorites.

The only problem is that a couple of the projects require outdated technology (like a cassette player/recorder) or require knowledge of such technology. Otherwise, it will be a good resource from which to draw some ideas to spice up my project repertoire.

Exactly what I am looking for

I have used Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary since high school. It is a great dictionary, but it did not focus on American English. This new Advanced American Dictionary is what I have been looking for. Better yet, the computer version of this dictionary that came with the book is so easy to use. I find a new way to use Dictionary on PC every week. In fact, I use this Dictionary on my PC more often than the book. The CD-ROM itself is already worth the money I spent.

Inconsistent and very conservative pronunciation given

Oxford dictionaries are great for British English, but they're not convincing when it comes to American English.
Phonologically speaking, there are two types of American English:

1) cot-caught merged American accents (or low back merged) ''innovative''
2) cot-caught unmerged American accents (or low back unmerged) ''conservative''

Cot-caught merged American accents are used by people living in the American West, Midland (Central Ohio, Central Indiana, Western PA),
Vermont, Miami...In these accents: CAUGHT is pronounced like COT, DAWN like DON, CALLER like COLLAR and so on.
Most people speaking accents close to the General American (or Hollywood accent) have this merger.

For some unknown reason, this dictionary focuses on conservative accents used Back East and in the South of the US:
1. at times, as in the case of words like BOSS, only the Back East (rounded) pronunciation is given
2. at times, as in the case of words like DOG, both the Back East (rounded) and the Western (unrounded) pronunciation is given
3. at times, as in the case of the word DAWN, the written pronunciation indicates the Back East accent (with a rounded vowel [dO:n], but the recorded voice pronounces it with the Western accent (with an unrounded vowel [dä:n]).

So, there is no consistency at all when it comes to pronunciation!
Editors aimed for the conservative (East Coast) pronunciation, but they hired people from California to provide the recorded pronunciation,
so all you get is this inconsistent mess!

So, I recommend that you stay away from this dictionary and buy the analog (Advanced Learner's dictionary) released by the most famous American dictionary publisher,
which uses spelling-to IPA transcription to-recording approach very accurately and consistently.

Why impose regional or conservative accents on foreign learners? It makes no sense!
If you pronounce BOSS with a rounded vowel you will sound like Joey (from Friends) or Nanny Fine.
Do you really want to sound like that? Well, according to Oxford, you do!

Not Impressed

Although I've given this dictionary four stars, I'm really disappointed with this book.
The contents are great, this dictionary will help to improve your English, no question about it. Even though there are some flaws like horrible thin yellow paper (it's pretty transparent), a clumsy cover and pale printing I could almost love this book.
The tiny printing type this is what nearly ruined this dictionary for me. It could be way more better for its cost (41 dollars!) if printed with just a little bigger font. If I'd known about its quality I wouldn't have bought it. Not impressed.

The book turned out to be pretty sturdy for how flimsy its pages look. The paper pages are made of is reeeealy thin but surprisingly durable. Now you can get it for half price (whereas I got it for $41 2 y.a.) which makes it a no-brainer.

Excellent photo History

The author has created an excellently written and beautifully illustrated account of a subject that has neglected by aerospace history. Flying independently of aerodynamic methods using backpack rocket or jet devices has been one of the holy grails of manned flight and author Olivo has put together a detailed account of the development of "backpack" flying devices beginning with the fictional flights of Buck Rogers and up to present day orbital Manned Maneuvering Devices such as the MMU and SAFER. Chapters on the Bell rocketbelt and Jetbelt include descriptions from several of the original Bell pilots. The book also contains a pre-Bell rocketbelt history of work done in the early 50's at the Redstone Arsenal and work by Aerojet and Thiokol in the late 50's. This book is a must have for any aerospace history or "jetpack" enthusiast.

Good solid history for history buffs and those new to Rocket Rangers

If you've ever dreamt of flying solo through the air, rocket-riding over grayish lunar craters or simply taking spacewalks `round our spinning big blue Earth, pick up this 2-volume set and read about the Rocket Rangers. These are the men who have fullfilled man's ageless aerospace dream, with many chapters written in 1st person. Unsurpassed. A must for the aerospace enthusiast, history buff and someone just learning about this facet of space history.

A historical looking glass to infinity and beyond!

It's a rare publication that recognizes the main players in the evolution of back-pack flying, finally! Rocketbelts, jetpacks and MMUs are just the start; the memories and insights gathered by the author provide a look at some of the most exciting and innovative times in aerospace history. The pictorial record alone is fascinating; and getting to know the characters really takes you there. Even while it takes us back, the two-book set inspires us to look ahead. These would be a great gift for the nostalgic and next-generation aerospace professionals alike. I believe books like these can help young people realize how much they love the adventures of science and aerospace, and may actually have the power to give a youngster one of the biggest possible advantages in life, knowing what they want to do with it.
