Exactly what I am looking for

I have used Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary since high school. It is a great dictionary, but it did not focus on American English. This new Advanced American Dictionary is what I have been looking for. Better yet, the computer version of this dictionary that came with the book is so easy to use. I find a new way to use Dictionary on PC every week. In fact, I use this Dictionary on my PC more often than the book. The CD-ROM itself is already worth the money I spent.

Inconsistent and very conservative pronunciation given

Oxford dictionaries are great for British English, but they're not convincing when it comes to American English.
Phonologically speaking, there are two types of American English:
1) cot-caught merged American accents (or low back merged) ''innovative''
2) cot-caught unmerged American accents (or low back unmerged) ''conservative''
Cot-caught merged American accents are used by people living in the American West, Midland (Central Ohio, Central Indiana, Western PA),
Vermont, Miami...In these accents: CAUGHT is pronounced like COT, DAWN like DON, CALLER like COLLAR and so on.
Most people speaking accents close to the General American (or Hollywood accent) have this merger.
For some unknown reason, this dictionary focuses on conservative accents used Back East and in the South of the US:
1. at times, as in the case of words like BOSS, only the Back East (rounded) pronunciation is given
2. at times, as in the case of words like DOG, both the Back East (rounded) and the Western (unrounded) pronunciation is given
3. at times, as in the case of the word DAWN, the written pronunciation indicates the Back East accent (with a rounded vowel [dO:n], but the recorded voice pronounces it with the Western accent (with an unrounded vowel [dä:n]).
So, there is no consistency at all when it comes to pronunciation!
Editors aimed for the conservative (East Coast) pronunciation, but they hired people from California to provide the recorded pronunciation,
so all you get is this inconsistent mess!
So, I recommend that you stay away from this dictionary and buy the analog (Advanced Learner's dictionary) released by the most famous American dictionary publisher,
which uses spelling-to IPA transcription to-recording approach very accurately and consistently.
Why impose regional or conservative accents on foreign learners? It makes no sense!
If you pronounce BOSS with a rounded vowel you will sound like Joey (from Friends) or Nanny Fine.
Do you really want to sound like that? Well, according to Oxford, you do!

Not Impressed

Although I've given this dictionary four stars, I'm really disappointed with this book.
The contents are great, this dictionary will help to improve your English, no question about it. Even though there are some flaws like horrible thin yellow paper (it's pretty transparent), a clumsy cover and pale printing I could almost love this book.
The tiny printing type this is what nearly ruined this dictionary for me. It could be way more better for its cost (41 dollars!) if printed with just a little bigger font. If I'd known about its quality I wouldn't have bought it. Not impressed.

The book turned out to be pretty sturdy for how flimsy its pages look. The paper pages are made of is reeeealy thin but surprisingly durable. Now you can get it for half price (whereas I got it for $41 2 y.a.) which makes it a no-brainer.
