Can't get enough of this series

I'm so enjoying catching up with the gang.

I just love the interaction between them all, how dynamic each couple.

Their personalities came through I love all their funny little ways, their quirkiness.

Loving everyone's response on hearing Skye's news, and also their understanding of keeping it from Carson. I agree!

Awe Slade and Trinity, how far they have come, he seems to work through the situation. He is a truly lovely man.

Trinity is one very lucky lady, he really loves her and is willing to put her first with all things even if he is struggling to come to terms with the right answers. They both get there in the end.

Oh no, poor Arsen I had an inkling the woman would be from his past, still looking forward to how that situation ends.

Ahh, it all becomes clear for Lexie, just when Conrad finally realises they have something worth having, she has a devastating blow with her parents, then she sees her dad whilst out - OH NO!

Sean and Scarlet are such a great couple, I love hearing about their shenanigans, he is a very proud, independent man and as a wife dealing with a convalescing husband, believe me I have been there! Scarlet is handling it very well, I had a similar situation arise; I left my husband for one night after he thought he was 'well' enough to go back to work.

Ending with the exact same situation hubby turning up where I was, to talk and have dinner.

You sure you didn't read my journal?

I love that although this is fiction we get real life situations, where everyone of us readers identifies with some part of the characters stories.

Slide needs to realize trinity is a spoiled brat and he can do so much better than her!!! It irritates me that he puts so much effort into being perfect for her and she takes it for granted or acts like it's her way or the highway...I'd really love to see him and Dee create feelings for each other..cayson is sweet I really hope things start going right for them, they deserve it....I'd also like Beatrice to tell Conrad to go fly a kite instead of be her "big brother" it's annoying the mix signals he gives off. I do feel bad for Conrad that he won't have biological kids because lexie had maternal paranoia after Jared. Aside for that and a few grammatical spelling errors it was great. Can't wait for next week.

Fascinating!

Another treasure from the past, this book, written by a medical doctor, was originally published in 1907. A virtual encyclopedia of precious and semi-precious stones and metals, this nearly 500-page book is loaded with lore and sprinkled liberally with anecdotes and historical information on how precious and semi-precious stones and metals were used in the past. There are many fascinating stories about the superstitions and legends that surrounded them; who owned what and how much; which diamonds were the biggest and how big they were, stories about kings, queens and potentates who owned them, how traditions surrounding precious and semi-precious stones came to be, and much more.

Although the book is encyclopedic, fortunately, it doesn't read like an encyclopedia. Dr. Fernie is a gifted writer whose engrossing style grabs and holds the reader's interest as he brings the history and lore of metals and precious stones to life. Of course there are sections for each stone and metal so you can go right to one you are interested in if you don't want to read the whole book.

In his introduction the good doctor states that the purpose of the book is to vindicate our forefathers' confidence in precious stones and metals for remedial uses either by scientific grounds or simple experience. Much of the information is anecdotal, and he freely admits that some if it is pure superstition, but not all. The metal copper is a notable exception as there is plenty of proof of its antiviral and antibacterial properties. It seems that whole villages near copper mines were infected with cholera, except for the miners. Doctors, noting this, began to experiment and found that by causing a person to wear a small copper plate over his/her stomach area, the seat of the disease, the person was protected from contracting cholera. This was proven again and again with soldiers and many others. He also adds other information about how copper was used to kill bacteria and viruses in water.

I did a little research on the Internet and found that in 2008 scientists had proven the ability of copper to kill bacteria and viruses and were doing research on uses for it, one possibility being use as touch plates in public places. There is nothing to indicate that anything was ever done. I am not good at reading scientific jargon, but my understanding from reading the report was that they tried to break it down into its components and found that wasn't possible. Sounds like they were looking for something to patent, and when they couldn't find it, they may have abandoned the project. Makes me wonder how many other useful and valuable substances have never been used for the benefit of the public because they couldn't be patented.
The table of contents is really a convenient index in the front of the book of where information on each stone and metal can be found. There is a general index in the back.

All in all very enjoyable to read and a valuable addition to my library.

Great delivery & prompt service. This was a replacement for an old book that fell apart and was no longer useful. So you must know I like this book as it provides detailed facts on precious stones which I needed to learn about (since the 1950s). Highly recommend this book for those who want to get into the occult (secretive) powers and how to use such for better understanding of metaphysical properties of Mother Nature's cupboard.

I actually owned this book years ago, lost it and found it here again on Amazon. This book is a must read for anyone who makes jewelry like I do. More than useless superstition it will give the essential information to use specific stones for specific purposes. Both spiritual and medicinal. It will make the difference between making a pretty, if expensive bauble and a priceless amulet or talisman. If you are not the least bit interested in anything spiritual or occult this book is not for you. If gemstones are just for decoration, this book is not for you. If the only medicine you take is chemicalized poison endorsed by the FDA, this book is not for you.
It was originally written in the early 1900's so some of the tone and syntax used might be a little trying to get through, it is well worth the effort.

R. L. Stine's "The Boyfriend"

I read this story when I was in high school. My sister bought it and read it, and though I seldom read YA novels, I did pick this one up and finished it in a couple of hours. It was really very good, the best YA book I had read to date. Because I liked it, I read a lot of R. L. Stine novels after that. "The Boyfriend" was the best of them.
Joanna, the main character, is a rich girl who has a thing for wild boys. Dex, the "boyfriend", is a talented boy, an actor, who lives with his aunt on the wrong side of town, and he's Joanna's type...at first. But the differences between them, that they move about in different social circles, doesn't sit well with Joanna and she gets bored with Dex and stands him up a lot. She has her eyes on Shep, a boy from a well-to-do family.
In the middle of the night, after being stood up again, Dex persuades Joanna to go for a ride to the canyon accompanied by his friend Pete. Once at the Promontory, Dex starts goofing off like he always does, playing around on the edge of the cliff...and slips. Joanna hears Dex's body break as it hits the ground below. And in a rush of terror and confusion, she drives away from the scene and gets into a car accident.
Joanna winds up in the hospital with minor injuries but Pete tells her that Dex didn't make it. 'Dex is dead, Joanna,' Pete says, 'and you RAN away!' Joanna feels bad, tells Pete she was going for help. He doesn't believe her and leaves angry. She is sad to hear that Dex is dead, but strangely feels relieved too.
But Dex comes back from the grave to torment Joanna for abandoning him.
The characterizations are among R. L. Stine's strongest and in the end the reader is still uncertain as to what really happened to Dex that night at the Promontory. I won't let the cat out of bag, but after finishing the book, you'll understand what I mean.
I recommend this story highly.

"Her boyfriend's back...from the grave."

In "The Boyfriend," Joanna Collier wants to break up with her current boyfriend, Dex, in order to date someone new: Shep Forrest. But she doesn't get the chance to do so before Dex accidentally falls off a cliff to his death. Then six weeks later, she starts receiving phone calls and visits from her "dead" boyfriend. Was his death just a misunderstanding--or is he really back from the grave as a zombie?
Like most of Stine's books, "The Boyfriend" is a quick read and can be finished off in only a few hours; but, unfortunately, it's also formulaic and episodic. There aren't too many surprises, either, that Stine fans can't figure out for themselves one step ahead, leaving a rather disappointing mess at the end. Nevertheless, his books do have an appeal like junk food: there's no real nutritional value to them and they probably rot young readers' brains, but they're quickly-gratifying and addictive. Worth reading if you're looking for some semi-scary mind candy.

I liked this book a lot because it is just great! When I read it I felt like I was in the book, it's that good.

The main character is Joanna. She an 18teen year old girl with a boyfriend named Dex. Joanna and Dex have been going out for a long time now but... Joanna has been cheating on him with a guy named Shep. But something even more important is happening and it has to do with Dex. He has been acting and looking weird lately. He turning green, and his eyes are all red, his skin is peeling and he has this gross smell of garbage. But in the end there is a little surprise for you!!

I think everyone will like this book I mean who couldn't!

Disappointing

I wasn't all that impressed with this book. The chapter about sociopaths in the Bible seemed pretty farfetched. Some of the material was good, but a lot of it he was borrowing from another author, so I began to think maybe I should have bought her book. I was disappointed with what I received for the price I paid.

A Different Perspective!

Great book, even though a lot of the material is from other authors, it's brought together in a very practical way. As Christians, we sometimes feel guilty if we don't love everyone, we blame ourselves. This book walks you through how you can forgive people, but also choose not to have them in your life. There is pure evil in this world, not everyone is good. Making a decision to not allow wicked people into your life is life changing for me. Even if it's a blood relative, we must just turn them over to God. Their issues are theirs to work out, not ours. It's between them and God. The people that continue to lay guilt trips at your feet, to keep you enslaved to them and their approval.....we must step out of our own self imposed prison and find freedom. This book helped me do this.

Not Really A Book -- Just a Compilation of Other Books

This book covers a necessary topic, one which has seemed to slip between the cracks. The topic does seem like an oxymoron: Christians and Sociopaths; but, it is more a reality than one can imagine. The church (any denomination) is the perfect breeding ground for Sociopaths and the perfect cover for them. It was good and timely for Conner to address the topic.

Conner dealt with the topic from a 10,000 foot view, but swooped down to take a closer look at certain points. The reading was easy and flowed smoothly.

A serious drawback about this book is that it really is more of a composite of three other books: "The Sociopath Next Door", "Total Forgiveness", and "Love Fraud" plus sections of the Bible, as well as church prayers and catechisms. There actually was not much original writing in the book itself. Most books reference ideas, quotes or whatever -- rather than use them as the main substance of the book.

It is though Conner did not write a book, but just compiled some relevant, appropriate material from other books. Almost plagiarism, except that he gave credit. If I had written a "book" like that for graduate school, I believe that I would not have gotten a very good grade; I might have even flunked the assignment.

That being said, it was a quick read, with some interesting thoughts, especially if one has not read the embedded books. However, the price was too high for the book. Half the price would have been more on target.

I don't think I would recommend this book, unless someone could borrow it or get it for free.

For many years, Lajos Egri's highly opinionated but very enjoyable The Art of Dramatic Writing has been a well-guarded secret of playwrights, scriptwriters, and writers for television. Unlike many other books on playwrighting (several of which Egri criticizes during the course of this one), the author's systematic breakdown of the essentials for creating successful realistic plays and screenplays effectively demystifies the process of creative writing. Egri, who formulated his thoughts about "a well-made play" during its heyday (the 1940s and '50s), places a premium on an exhaustive analysis of characters and discussion of their psychological motivations. The writer is exhorted to find a premise to explore and to discover which characters will most effectively demonstrate this thesis, then is shown how most effectively to place them into conflict with each other. Conflict itself is also discussed, particularly how to create scenarios in which the crisis develops at a pace that feels unforced and natural. What Lajos Egri will show you:

* Formulate your premise. Premise is a statement, idea, or conviction that your story proves true. For example, the premise of Romeo and Juliet would be something like "Love defies even death."

* Choose a pivotal character who will force the conflict.

* Orchestrate the other characters. The unity of opposites must be binding. Polar opposites must form a dialectic which creates a unified tension.

* Be careful to select the correct point of attack. Every point of attack starts with conflict.

* There are several types of conflict, such as jumping conflict, but you only want rising or foreshadowing conflict.

* No conflict can rise without perpetual exposition, which is transition. For example, a character going about his daily life doesn't suddenly become a NAZI, it happens in gradual steps--transition.

* Rising conflict, the product of exposition and transition, will ensure growth.

* Characters must conflict--there must be some polarity.

* Crisis will lead to climax. Climax will lead to conclusion.

* Dialogue should come from the voice of the character, not the writer.

Many TV, film, and novel plots and characters lack compelling conflict. The characters are just floating by... until something big happens. Lajos Egri illustrates how to change all this.

Our Aristotle

Egri's work is the only contender that I know of to Aristotle's "Poetics" for a guide to what makes good writing Good. Throw in Joseph Campbell's "The Hero with A Thousand Faces" and you have a sort of holy trilogy and trinity for writers. I've looked at some writing computer programs (haven't bought any yet), and many of them use one, or all of these methods. As an aside, I'll also throw in Polti as a source for plot. Not because I think he's very good, but because he's popular.
In Egri's world, character is king. Each of the characters, he states, must have a driving reason to be on stage, and their reasons must be diametrically opposed. In other words, they can't all get what they want - for one person to get what she wants, someone else must be deprived of their goal. Each character must also be desperate (desperate enough to be interesting) to get what he wants. (It's been a few years since I've read Egri, so please forgive my bad paraphrasing.)
Using many examples (some familiar, some unfamiliar) he gives you the tools to analyze plays (and all stories), and (therefore, hopefully) write plays, or stories, or novels, or movies... My girlfriend and I, even years after reading this book can't walk out of a movie theater or playhouse without analyzing it using the methods we learned from Egri.
If I were only able to reccomend one book to writers, this would be it. (Followed, of course, by Aristotle & Campbell). If I were to have all books erased from my memory and could only re-read one, this would be a strong contendor. If I could say only one thing to you, reader of this review, it would be read this book as soon as you can get your grubby hands on it.

I wish I had read this one first

Well, I read this book recently after reading god knows how many screenwriting books. Some of them are quite repetitive aren't they?! The thing that I've found is that there are a lot of books out there that explain the three-act structure by saying you have a set-up, then you have your turning points, your climax, your resolution blah blah blah. Thing is we all instinctively know we need this stuff in our plays and screenplays but what's hard as a writer is actually figuring out what these should be. What makes a good turning point, what makes a good resolution etc? If you want to find out, I strongly suggest you read this book.
I found this book (along with Robert McKee's 'Story') the most useful out of the many (screenwriting) books I've read because he gets into the nitty gritty hard stuff. He makes you think about how important the premise is. I disagree with some of the reviews of this book on this site that say that Egri says you have to know your premise from the outset, he doesn't say that, what he does say is that you have to know it clearly at some stage in writing your script and this is true because we go to films to find something out and all the pieces have to fit together or you'll say something like 'The second half of the movie dragged', 'Why did she do that? That wasn't in character' or 'The movie tried to prove too many points all at once' and so on.
The more I write scripts, the more I realise that it's all about planning and architecture because pacing is everything unlike novels etc.
In particular, the most useful takeout from this book is that your premise has to match your character and story. He goes into detail using 'A Doll's House' as an example. If Nora had been a different character, the resolution wouldn't have worked as well as it did and if the story happenings weren't chosen carefully based on her character, then the story wouldn't have rung true nor would we have understood what the premise is.
The other thing that I think you'll really like is the stuff on conflict, the different types of conflict and when to use a particular kind of conflict for the story you wish to tell.
I'm writing a script right now and this book encouraged me to be a bit more lateral and let go of the ideas I already had because they may not be the right situation for my main character or the story as is might not be the best vehicle for arguing the premise I want to argue.
Brilliant stuff! Written so long ago yet still so relevant.

but I still would not recommend buying a book from someone who steals other people's ...

I began as a technical review of this book, but resigned when I saw the 'author' was blatantly plagiarizing from various Internet blogs. Hopefully Packt scrubbed the plagiarism, but I still would not recommend buying a book from someone who steals other people's work and try to pass it off as his own. I also think that it's unethical for Packt to have continued with an author that was so blatantly stealing. Here is my original email to Packt, they never responded:

"The "author" is plaigerising large pieces of this book. I noticed that his writing shifts between using poor grammatical structures and using clear concise structures; his grammar usage is not consistent.

Once I got to page 7 I started doing research. Half of page 7 is copied from this blog:

All the author did was change the word "Heat" to "Orchestration".

On page 3, he copies a sentence directly from the OpenStack documentation:
